ya, ellsbury is about as good as dye right now (dddddddfense). maybe not if they'd be getting ABs in lf, but it doesnt make a big difference. altho maybe if they call up ellsbury this year they feel obligated to make him the big league 4th of all next year which maybe isnt a great a idea
the gagne stuff is stupid. the difference between delcarmen and gagne over like 20 innings is what two runs. |

they've also got murphy and moss available to come up and play some non-pena defense. as soon as JD Drew starts hitting at anything near his career norms this crap will be laughable. (hopefully that happens sometime this year )

problem is, moss, murphy and ellsbury are all lefties (along with bubba bell, ryan kalish, josh reddick, and any other outfielder in our top 30 prospect zone), which wouldnt help much (drew is a pathetic .209/.278/.337 vs lefties, the root of the problem)
having a right handed bat to give drew a rest vs lefties has value, bringing up another lefty would only have value as a pinch runner or defensive replacement for manny |

as long as dye only takes over WMP's role (in rf vs. lefties, LF when manny needs a day off, ocassional DH if ortiz is hurt), then fine, wmp + garbage has no value to the sox.
the 2 draft picks when he walks would be pretty sweet, also |

yes, it's a gamble. offering him arbitration for a one-year deal is likely to be turned down, though, since he can sign elsewhere for a multi-year deal and many teams will do this.
the most likely scenario is that dye is traded, is offered arbitration, declines, signs with a team with a top 15 pick, and then boston gets a second-round pick plus a sandwich pick as compensation picks if Dye is listed as a Type A free agent (likely, due to 2006). arbitration is a calculated gamble where the owners are usually right to offer it, but will sometimes lose in doing so. the value of sandwich picks continues to grow, however, so it is often worth it. it's one of the coolest parts of baseball, imo. |
