3rd question down. Also, it says nothing about it in the rule book: http://www.nfl.com/fans/rules/passinterference |

Sorry to bump this one, but I don't remember this being discussed... and was unaware of this rule change: "Face-guarding was discontinued several years ago and I completely missed it. I talked to Dean Blandino in the league office and he confirmed what you're saying. Blandino, by the way, was in the replay booth at the Patriots-Colts game. Ellis Hobbs should not have been flagged for pass-interference. He didn't make contact with the receiver and in no way did Hobbs impede Reggie Wayne's ability to catch the pass. Blandino confirmed that the incorrect call was made. It advanced the ball from the Patriots' 19-yard line to the one-yard line and was the big play in a touchdown drive that led to a two-point conversion and a tie game at 21-21. Referee Bill Carollo made no reference to face-guarding in his explanation, but CBS analyst Phil Simms did. Apparently, he, too, doesn't know the rule no longer exists. The next time you hear a TV analyst say, 'he wasn’t playing the ball,' think of the Hobbs play, then turn down the sound." [/ QUOTE ] This is from Jags.com right? To be fair, that was his response to this:
[ QUOTE ] “He was face-guarding. You’re not permitted to do that. It’s been that way forever. You can’t shadow a receiver for the purpose of blocking his vision of the ball. That’s what Hobbs was doing. It was an easy call.” Vic, you should check your NFL rules book. Face-guarding was made legal in the NFL six or seven years ago. Learn the rules before you make blatantly wrong claims. [/ QUOTE ] |

I read it the other day when he made his claim that it was a rule and I knew he was wrong. I read it earlier today and was very happy to see he was corrected. He is my favorite editor/writer on any website, and that isn't just because I'm a Jags fan. That "ask vic" column is a terrific column and its every day. So if you need a quick football fix, it's always there. |

well of course it changes the game. I hate when people argue like it's a predetermined outcome.
It doesn't really bother. Bad calls happen. It's not like it killed the Pats. But who knows what happens after that? It's 3rd and 7. Manning could throw a pick. Or incomplete, then it's field goal time. Who knows? edit: I misunderstood you. It looks like we're in agreement. |

If I hadn't watched the game and read that line I would get the idea that call somehow changed the game. [/ QUOTE ] The play changes the situation from 3rd and 7, where the Colts convert probably 40% of the time or so, to 1st and goal at the 1, where the Colts score a TD probably 95% of the time. That's a pretty big change, especially for a penalty that was blatantly wrong. And it was pretty clearly the biggest play of the drive (the 25 yard pass to Clark happened on 1st down), which is all the statement was. Key play of the game? Of course not. |
