[ QUOTE ]
Someone noted they like to ridicule / mock dumb people who think they are smart... why? Seems like such a waste of energy - what thrill does one get from doing that? -Al [/ QUOTE ] Some people get their kicks off of feeling superior to other people. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] One of my favorite groups of people are dumb people who think they are smart, but don't know when they are being [censored] with. It is really entertaining to talk to those people, IMO. [/ QUOTE ] You've actually got this completely backwards. It's the people who [censored] with people thinking it means they're smart that are dumb. Lying to supergeniuses and convincing them of something that isn't true isn't hard. The only thing this tests is how cynical a person is. [/ QUOTE ] Exactly. I'll sometimes fall victim to believing anything if a really good friend says it. Then when they bust out laughing, I'll tell them to go eff themselves and laugh at my own gullibility. I'd never believe horsecrap like that unless my own trust had stunned me into insensibility. |

[ QUOTE ] 99% of humanity fits into this category [/ QUOTE ] Haha yeah I think everyone has been guilty at one time or another, of thinking they are really smart (when in actuality very few people are). Someone noted they like to ridicule / mock dumb people who think they are smart... why? Seems like such a waste of energy - what thrill does one get from doing that? -Al [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, that's pretty much shooting fish in a barrel. That noted, some people really do groove on it. But probably the dumber and more screwed up among us. Dumb people find it a greater and more unusual triumph to be smarter than someone, and screwed up smart people feel the need to put down less capable people more than do people who are simply smart but less screwy. |

[ QUOTE ]
I don't know if slots are advertised as +EV. But there are profitable situations in some slot-machines. Stanford Wong has written on ...Not as many as there used to be I'm guessing. [/ QUOTE ] Of course they do, you just haven't spent 5 minutes walking thru the slot floors looking for the rare 100.4% payback machine[s]. In fact, there are more than there used to be, given growth in the industry [although not in all areas] and with comp/bonus dollars you can certainly make a profit adjusting for variance. [I do not do this, but know those that do.] Plus, you get freerolls into slot tourneys with cash prizes, cars, etc, etc. Rebates/comp on slot clubs can reach as high as 40%. Even playing a 98% playback dollar slot on the Strip, that's quite an EV+, getting free rooms, meals, airfare in some cases, etc, as well as the prior stuff mentioned [but I'm a craps player which is of course EV-.] I LOL when someone says something obvious about gambling and people are all like 'no wai, rly, ZOMG!' |

I guess for myself, I just really do not enjoy talking to dumb people at all for longer periods of time, let alone taking the time to mock them or point out how stupid they are. -Al |

[/ QUOTE ] There's actually a famous guy who made a million bucks doing this, and it didn't take him long -- I think it was in something like a year. Video poker. You have to play the odds right though, so wasn't not just yanking the bandit's arm. I think they tightened those machines up, though, but not enough that you can't win. |

Me too. I usually try to steer talk to what we can all enjoy talking about. It helps me keep my cool, not be a smart-ass, and not get bored. Unfortunately, with dumb people, that is often really lame stuff, and my tolerance for it can be limited.
That's why I often steer over into people matters. Psychology and stuff everyone can relate to. We're all people, after all. And smart people often have no more of a handle on these things than anyone else does, so everyone can participate. |

Blarg,
"I usually try to steer talk to what we can all enjoy talking about." That's exactly what I try to do and why I have some friends who are great fun to hang out with who we just talk about sports and drinking girls and other fun stuff with each other. |

Yeah, for those subjects having a sense of humor and good stories are usually better than being particularly smart.
Sports is an especially good one to bring everybody in, but works better with guys than girls. Even guys with zero in common can have a great yap about sports though, and you get a new subject almost every day. Plus you can be real competitive, needle and put down each other's teams and manhood without anyone taking it seriously. |
