[ QUOTE ]
I'm still confused as to why everyone views this as a "problem". It doesn't sound like the OP is neglecting any responsibilities. Is everyone here really this unhappy? <sighhhh> [/ QUOTE ] Two reasons off the top of my head it kinda sucks. 1)Most days I am dead tired, and I think I'm going to go to sleep early to make up for it but I just don't. Fighting to stay awake sucks. I'm Generally less productive when tired, not as sharp, etc but I keep doing it. 2) I recently started working out, and when I'm tired as hell can't lift as much. Also it's gotta be somewhat bad for your health to not sleep. I will do this no matter what time I have to get up in the morning, and just force myself to go on while tired. I never "make up sleep" by going to bed early. Only times I do is when I get to sleep until 2 or something. edit: just thought of something. For those of you who always put off going to sleep, do you also do tell yourself you will start an assignment or something in 10 minutes and keep pushing it back? |

Have exact same problem it fuks me constantly [/ QUOTE ] Yeah. What is the reason behind it? I think 99% of the time I don't goto sleep there are two things going on 1) My mind is being stimulated by a screen / interacting with a screen. 2) Stimulated is a strong word as most of the stuff I do is crap, but more to the point sleep is boring. FWIW I am a huge procrastinator for things in which affect only me. Meaning I won't delay doing something if it [censored] someone else. I would bet most share this trait. |

obv. i have this problem too, very good subject.
i have noticed though, that a lot of successful people i know are early risers. this correlation, along with a link someone posted in OOT maybe a year ago (sleeping girlfriend problem) has led me to at least "entertain" the fact that the morning person vs. nightowl arguement is complete BS. i would say i'm 100% nightowl, but this article has led me to question that. i definitely recommend reading it to anyone who wants to start getting up early. it helped me for about 2 months, haha. http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/200...n-early-riser/ |

I have this problem too. I think a huge part of this that people aren't really paying a lot of attention to is the fact that TV screens and computer monitors are extremely hyperstimulating, in ways that we often don't notice. When I was having insomnia problems a few years back, my doctor suggested I don't use a computer or watch TV for the two hours before I go to bed because it would keep me up. I realize that your problem isn't insomnia, but I think that you're just displaying another syndrome of being overstimulated. I'm no neurochemist or anything like that, but I'm pretty confident that staring at a monitor or TV can be subtly addicting in a way that undermines our ability to tear ourselves away from the source of our stimulation. Basically we're all brain-fried zombies.

FF,
It sickens me that I think there's a decent element of truth in what you write. |

I think it's pretty common.
Partly, it takes some effort to get up, brush your teeth, do whatever, and go to bed and you get too tired to want to do that. Partly, don't want to miss out on either reading a good 2p2 post or the right chance to make the perfect response to a 2p2 post. I did this sometimes before I had the internet - just stuck watching dumb TV - but it's worse with the internet. Darko, how old is your Dad that he didn't have a TV? Partly, you might need more socialization than you are getting during the day.

microbet- I don't believe that I said my pops didn't have a TV. But he didn't have video games or the internet but television wasn't a huge deal in his household growing up, there wasn't a thousand channels and everything that moved wasn't covered. Today we are tuned to everything that everyone does, when our parents grew up TV was just a form of entertainment, a tool to escape from the real world until the news came on. Today it isn't only an escape but a dive back into the real world and we sit like zombies in front of it hoping to not miss any of it.
My father's hobbies are hunting, running, and sports of all kinds. This is what he did as a kid and it was b/c he was never in his room whereas kids today are never not in their room. I drive down neighborhoods and am surprised when I see kids throwing a football in the street. It is understandable though when a kid has every toy imaginable within four walls to think he would want to leave or be motivated to try something different. I am not a hunter and I find it strange but I also grew up with much more to do than my father did, hunting was a way to keep him occupied and it has stuck with him. Different generations is all and that is all that I was pointing out. |

Today it isn't only an escape but a dive back into the real world and we sit like zombies in front of it hoping to not miss any of it. [/ QUOTE ]This was a really good post overall, and this point in particular is excellent. Before the internet and the constant and overwhelming avalanche of information, people were a lot more satisfied with simply relaxing, I think. Phones seem to be a good way of looking at this. Used to be that if you weren't around when someone called, you weren't around. Then we got answering machines, you know, just in case you were missing something. Then cell phones, because why miss anything if you don't have to? And now you can constantly check your email, look at people's myspace, and chat on AIM, all from your handheld device. So I think there's something to be said for the idea that we're conditioned to constantly be open to soaking up more info, and going to sleep seems like giving up... after all, maybe you'll miss something. |

Very soon I am going to be removing internet from my home completely in order to eliminate this very issue (I already don't watch TV). I'm a pro poker player and it's been bad up to now. I just rented a desk in an office, and that will be where I'll go for poker or if I need the internet. I've decided home should be a place to give my eyes and brain a rest from all that and of course to SLEEP.
