pretty good article for a die hard pats fan

I don't know, the theme seemed to be more about how the Patriots gave the game away and Manning 'finally' came up big. Still pretty gracious overall, though, and I do give him credit for mentioning how Brady showed up his WR (Troy Brown), like he always kills Manning for doing.

I don't see their success as a step itself, but I think their success is a catalyst for racial equality in general. The entire country will see two black men succeed where none of have succeeded before(due almost entirely because they didnt get the chance). That the nfl has given these men the chance speaks highly of the nfl, and will make small steps to helping our country in general.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks. Extremely well put, and I agree.

adios,

[ QUOTE ]
A non sequiter to the post I brought up. This looks more like a strawman to me. What is the history of hiring black coaches in the NFL?

[/ QUOTE ]

The history is, of course, very poor. But if we're talking about "going forward," why are we focusing on the (relatively) distant past, and not look at recent history? Since 2000, Herm Edwards,Lovie Smith, Mike Tomlin, Romeo Crennell, and Marvin Lewis have all gotten their first jobs. James Lofton will likely continue that. Dennis Green, Art Shell, and Tony Dungy have all gotten second jobs after being let go. What I'm saying is, the great breakthrough for black coaches being hired isn't because Tony Dungy got to the Super Bowl, because it's been happening for the past 6 years.

James, I'm sorry you felt the need to attack my maturity because you misunderstood my post.

Let me rephrase the question:

Why is Dungy and Smith making the Super Bowl the step towards racial equality, and not the fact that these guys were hired in the first place? It seems as though that is the larger step, yet nobody makes a big deal about the Pittsburgh Steelers hiring a young, black coach. Instead, it's a great step towards racial equality when a black head coach, who's started out as an assistant in 1981 and has been a head coach since 1996, makes the Super Bowl.

VarlosZ,

[ QUOTE ]
Sure, but for the % of black coaches to match up with the NFL's population (of players, that is), you'd have to hire 15 more of them.

[/ QUOTE ]

I was responding to James's quote here:

[ QUOTE ]
I mean, in a country where we've never come close to having a minority president, and the racial distribution of high profile jobs don't come close to mirroring the population makeup of our citizens

[/ QUOTE ]

My question is still, when do we deem it enough that there's "racial equality"? 50% of the head coaches are black? And why are we only focusing on head coaches, but not GMs or owners? Nobody's talking about Jerry Reese, are they?

If "any steps in the right direction are worthy of coverage and acclaim," why isn't there a two-week media blitz any time a black guy gets a job on a coaching staff or a front office? And finally, is two weeks of calling Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith "Afro-American" really establishing racial equality?

Edit: For the NFL's % of black coaches to match up with the population, we'd have to fire two of them.

This obviously means that the NFL needs to fire a large number of its black players.

This foucs on race is stupid. The NFL is doing fine (with respect to race).
