i think most people are pretending to have too high of standards for what you can do to defend yourself.

if i'm sitting in my house at night with my gun in my lap, and someone breaks in a door or window and i see them, they are gonna have my whole clip headed at their face. I'm not the police, i don't know how to try to get someone to drop a gun while protecting my own life. I will do whatever i need to do to give myself exactly a 100% chance of surviving the situation.

If I know for sure that i am in control, then i of course would back off. If someone pulls a knife and i aim a gun at their face, and they stay away from everyone, I won't shoot them. I have control.

At the same time, if a very large guy mugs me on the street, unarmed, but he is just beating my ass, I would also shoot him dead without a thought. I have no clue who he is, what his intentions are. for all i know he will beat me to death. i have no control.

I would much rather keep $1000 on me and pay them that to leave if that meant I wouldn't have to shoot someone in the head. Maybe more, like $5k.

[/ QUOTE ]
LOL, This is a defeatist attitude. Do you really think the police are going to protect you? What happens when they come back? Sometimes you just have to fight fire with fire.

Good story OP, thanks for making my day a little better. For everyone who thinks this was unnecessary act, the shooter GAVE HIM A CHANCE TO DROP THE GUN! If you want to continue to bluff your way through a situation, that's fine, but what happens when your weak 43o gets met by bullets (literally)? I too would have no problem doing the exact same thing, and although I may not sleep super well for the next week, most of it would come from the idea of retaliation, not from the fact that I had taken a life. People seem to forget that those who resort to crime don't have the best decision making processes to begin with (ldo, they're armed robbers), so what's to stop them from just deciding to cap a couple people if you just give them the money and hope they leave? Oh, that's right, they get more street cred. Quick thinking, and an excellent decision to pull the trigger, IMO.

A gun is a tool, like a hammer or a saw. A hammer is used to hammer in nails. A saw is used to saw things in two. A gun is used for killing. Anytime someone points a gun at another person, you have to assume they are going to kill that person.

It was extremely dangerous for the resident to warn the robber. In life or death situations, there is no such thing as a "fair fight." You do whatever you have to do to stay alive. Warning a robber only gives the robber a chance to prepare to stop you.

BTW - People advocating shooting to wound are so horribly stupid and wrong.

Really you guys who say you'd just shoot someone dead are insane, do you really want to live your life knowing you killed someone, to me that's the most hideous thing you could do other than rape or child molestation. Killing another human would be an impossibility for me.

[/ QUOTE ]

wow. I would live proudly knowing that I saved my friend's life.

Chances of a retaliation from dead guy's friends and family?

[/ QUOTE ]

My first consideration; I'd assume that would happen.

[/ QUOTE ]

Especially since his address was published in the newspaper (and on the internet).
