Two things:

Betis - Sevilla is Saturday. I've invited a Betis fan I don't even know over to watch it with me and a couple friends. Should be interesting as I've never seen a derbi with a Betis fan. I knew a lot of them when I was in Sevilla but the derby was during Semana Santa so I was traveling and in Madrid at the time. The guy is from Sevilla and is in Pittsburgh doing some research at Carnegie Mellon. I have a couple Spanish friends who are my office mates and they've told me about him and him about me. We've actually gone to a couple of the same parties but I left before he showed up both times. Anyway, should be fun.

Apparently the whole world, as they say, at Real Madrid (president, players, fans) are demanding that Beckham be brought back into the club. Capello had said that Beckham was done, immediately after Beckham signed. Some people thought it was a revenge thing for having signed, I think it was because before Beckham signed he didn't want to ruin the chance that he renew his contract so Capello waited until that was no longer a possibility to say he wanted nothing to do with him.

Yeah, it was way too harsh. I think a big factor is that it happened right in front of the Atletico bench. If it happened anywhere else it would have been a yellow I think, which would be correct.

Yeah, guess that's the rumor. According to Marca, Real Madrid people are denying it.

Jared,

could you perhaps explain what the significance of the paint smear thing on Sevilla's uniforms is?

I think it's just some thing that Joma (maker of said jerseys) has. Deportivo and a couple others have the same thing going.

I was just watching a replay of the Atletico/Real match that happened this past weekend. The disallowed goal seems like one of the worst calls I've ever seen--unless I am misunderstanding the offside rule.

Here's the situation: Atletico is taking a free kick. At the time of the free kick, all of the Atletico players are onside, the ball bounces off the goal post. At this time, two Atletico players are offside. An Atletico player kicks the ball in the goal.

Let's try some ASCII art:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>

__________________________________________________ _

GK

A1 A2

R R R
</pre><hr />

When the ball is kicked (it was off a free kick, remember), all Atletico player were onside. The ball hits the post and lands at the feet of A2, who kicks it in. From the time the ball hit the post to the time A2 kicks it, both A1 and A2 are offside.

In the replays, you can see that the linesman doesn't put his flag up until well after the goal is scored. (enough time that the goal scorer ran from the 6-yard line to the 18 yard line in celebration). So it looks like the only possible reason he has for putting the flag up is because the goal scorer was offside at the time the ball hit the post. But isn't that wrong? Can you be offside for being offside when the ball hits the post? I thought the ball had to be played by your teammate? In this case, no Atletico player touched it from the time the free kick was taken until the shot on goal.

(As an aside, the reason the other Atletico player was offside was because he was rather blatantly taken down in the penalty area.)

I didn't see it but if it's as you describe it should not be offside. What matters is the position when the ball is played by your teammate not off the the post.

Poor quality, but you can see the play starting at about 5:15 of the following highlight video:

(At about 6:28, they replay it again, but only to show A1 being pulled down.)
