The Pogues - The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Holy crap is that a depressing song. Jawbreaker - Judas Priest Sorry About Dresden - As the Ruins are to Rome Slint - Good Morning Captain (most emo song ever) Townes Van Zandt - Marie Tom Waits - Georgia Lee, Come on Up to the House Jimmy Cliff - Many Rivers to Cross I think my all-time winner is the original Five Blind Boys' version of "Goodbye Mother." Johnny Mandel-Suicide is painless (the Mash theme) [/ QUOTE ] This was like my favorite song as a child. I don't know what that says about me. A few weeks ago I got really depressed and made a depressing mix that I listed to while I ingested a bunch of Vicodin and Oxycontin. The list below is like half of that mix and the most exemplary "sad" ones, none of which have been mentioned: Wilco - "At My Window Sad and Lonely" Bob Dylan - "If You See Her, Say Hello" Bonnie "Prince" Billy - "I See a Darkness" Semisonic - "Down in Flames" Lyle Lovett - "I Can't Love You Anymore" Jeff Buckley - "Last Goodbye" (actually forgot to put this on the mix) R.E.M. - "Everybody Hurts" (cliche I know) Morphine - "In Spite of Me" (there are other good choices by them) (for the record, "Suicide is Painless" kicked off the mix.) My brother just turned me on to Richard Buckner's "Blue and Wonder" which is good as well. Best ones already mentioned: "Tears in Heaven" obv, "Hurt" obv, "How Soon Is Now" and "Dry Your Eyes" are good picks. I love "How to Fight Loneliness" but it doesn't make me as sad as the others. If we're talking Radiohead I think "How to Disappear Completely" is sadder than any of the ones mentioned. (As far as that mix goes, the rest of it fits well together but the songs don't strike me as "sad" per se (e.g. Nirvana - "All Apologies", the Replacements - "Here Comes a Regular", The Rolling Stones - "Dead Flowers", etc.)) |

Anything by Mineral is pretty depressing.
Kinda trendy but Jack Johnson - Cocoon doesn't want to make you jump for joy. And who ever said Mogwai is right, some songs don't need words to be depressing. Explosions in the Sky is similar. |

Pretty retarded a song by a ska band could make me cry, but Catch 22's - As the Footsteps Die Out Forever can definitely do the trick.
every night for three long weeks she'd roam the hallways half asleep and as the footsteps fade away in my mind i can swear i can swear i heard her say don't wait for me i got a lot to do i got a lot to be and in the end maybe i'll see you there |

Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 [/ QUOTE ] I know the lyrics are profoundly depressing but the melody is so upbeat that I can't think of it as sad. Great song though. My saddest song is "If It Takes Forever" by Connie Francis. A definite oldie - the reason it's so sad for me is because it always gets me thinking about that Futurama episode where Fry's dog waits out his whole life for him.
