[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Can't access any outside email from work. [/ QUOTE ] Seriously, where do you work? China? [/ QUOTE ] Everyone I know that works at a financial services firm has the same restriction. I know people at Goldman, Lehman, Credit Suise and a few others that can only check work email. [/ QUOTE ] Why? Afraid you'll discuss secrets on the other e-mail? [/ QUOTE ] As Daver already mentioned, company email is logged while outside email isn't. His example of a trader was good, as were others that mentioned discussing any private information. I don't have access to anything that would really matter to anyone here, but there are still things that my company doesn't want to be public and it's a lot harder to tell if someone's published them if you allow access to outside email accounts. [/ QUOTE ] But PM'ing them on the forum, completely legit. [/ QUOTE ] No one claimed that IT departments in financial services are smart. |

sleeted,
you are the worst poster ever, without a doubt. also, the idea that you thought you somehow were so amazing at changing the name of a computer that a building full of computer geniuses wouldn't notice you playing WoW by doing things like say, looking at your monitor, is absolutely retarded. citanul |

[ QUOTE ] Did someone report you, or do they monitor their employees? [/ QUOTE ] They monitor you by your computer name. I changed mine to prevent this from happening, but somehow they still found out. [/ QUOTE ] Nice try, but changing your computer name to hide is like painting your house so the cops won't find out where you live. The house is in the same place, and your address is still plastered right above the front door. Here's the most likely "somehow" you refer to, in case you get the notion to try this play again: I'm guessing that someone did a network audit or saw some suspicious traffic. I don't play WOW, but a quick Google ("world of warcraft" port) search shows that it uses TCP on port 3724. If your network admin saw traffic on that port and typed "port 3724" into Google to figure out what it was, guess what the first link is? Blizzard's technical support. Assuming they were completely flummoxed by your clever play of a machine name change, it was a matter of seeing the IP address the traffic was headed to, matching that with a MAC address of the machine, and then figuring out what switch port you were coming off of. That corresponds to a network jack, which is where your computer is cabled to. A peek into your office when traffic was flowing thru the port, and there you were, putting on your orc shoes or whatever. A wireless connection is a little tougher, but do-able. I'm assuming yours was wired, as most places are. Now you teach me something about programming to make this a fair exchange, plstks. |
