Bisonbison,

I think I fit the challenge nicely. I'm 27, 5'11'', 340 lbs. as of last week, though I'll do a new weigh-in for this. I am currently out of town housesitting and taking care of my parents dogs. When I get back on Sunday, I'll have all the pictures you need for the challenge. Please pick me. I desperately need a kick in the ass. My girlfriend will appreciate it too.

Cheers,
Shakes

For any single people out there who want to loose weight without haveing to spend all their time cooking, I recomend Nutrisystem. It is easy to follow, and effective (I have lost 40 puonds since I started on March 10, and I couldn't be happier). It is a bit expensive though.

For all those who don't have scales adequate for their needs, this is the one to get, imo:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001DB...e&n=3760901

It's remarkably accurate and will weigh up to 440 lbs. It's better than most if you weigh over probably 280, as a lot of scales seem to get more and more innaccurate as you reach towards the higher end of their weight capacities.

Good luck to all; it's the best thing you'll ever do. Keep in mind, though, that you will fail in the long run if you look at this as a "diet" - i.e. something that has an end. A temporary change to your diet to lose some weight won't help you. If you're in the category that those who qualify for this are, you need a permanent lifestyle change that includes looking at why you eat, not just what you eat. It's very, very hard - harder than people who have never been there know. Do it for yourself, not the $$.

But take the money.

Good luck!

Excellent idea, Bison.

I would like to contribute and match your donations. $1/pound for the first 100lbs, then $0.50/pound for the next 200lbs, for each of the 5 contestants you choose.

Good luck to Dids and the others who are chosen!

From reading this thread, it looks like Bison has a full roster by now. I'm in, regardless. A couple hundred bucks free money is cool, but it's really just a way of keeping score. And I'm gonna kick all yer sases!

I'm 6'2" and 281 pounds. So I'm not quite super-heavyweight division like some of the guys, however, I am handicapped in this because

I am 38 years old.

I was heavy as a kid and heavy as a teen. In my early 20's I got a job as a courier and was in great shape. But then I settled down, got a series of desk jobs and have put on almost 100 pounds in the last 15 years.

I feel like if I don't get this done now, it's only gonna get tougher after 40.

Smok'n a bunch of 20-somethings is exactly the motivation I need!

So prepare to get pwned old school style

Battle Plan:

- Obviously I overeat, but my diet isn't realy that horrible. I rarely eat fast food and don't eat a lot of snacky food. I do tend to eat too much quantity wise - Occaisionally I'll cook up a frozen pizza for dinner and then wind up finishing it up over the course of the evening. Not every day, I do this kind of thing maybe once a week or every too weeks, but obviously enough to add up. I don't really see my diet as needing a huge change, rather just tightening up and plugging the leaks -> Getting on a real set schedule and eliminating what junk food I do eat.

- I do, however, drink a lot of cola! Easily 2L a day, every day. Just looked it up and that's almost 900 calories a day! So, assuming an optimal 2000 calories a day, that's almost half my daily intake. So that's gone, it'll be replaced by water and fruit juices. I've done this several times before, it's not fun for the first day or so but after that it's not a big deal, just a matter of not "falling off the wagon".

- My biggest problem is that I get almost no exercise. My diet hasn't really changed from when I was in shape, but at the time I was doing brutally hard physical activity for 6-7 hours a day. I still have my weight set so I'll start working out a half hour a day and I'll be walking an hour a day (rapid pace). That'll increase as I go.

For the other guys doing this, this is my biggest piece of advice:

Figure out whether you fall into the "Not really a problem eater, just eat too much and don't get enough exercise" category or the "I eat whenever I'm bored/upset/angry/stressed which frequently involves binging. And btw, I get almost no exercise either" category and formulate an appropriate plan of action.

If you're like me, in the former category, you have it a lot easier than the other guys. You can do this just by tweaking your diet down and getting off your butt and exercising. The getting off your butt and keeping at it are probably going to be the most difficult part but this is very, very doable.

For the guys who are serious food junkies, (my wife falls in this category so I have some experience here) IMHO the absolute most important thing you need to do is come up with substitutes for eating.

That is, if you eat when you're angry, upset or stressed, instead play video games and yell at the screen, or go hit some golf balls or...

If you eat when you're bored, get a hobby, or call a friend, or go out for a walk, or read a book or...

Whenever you think "I'd really like some ice cream/chips/candy bar" you need something to substitute and distract yourself.

Make sure this is something that it's okay if you become a little obsessive about it (don't substitute crack for food!) and the more things you can come up with, the better (so you don't get too bored or too obsessed with any one thing).

If you just sit around thinking about how much you'd like to be eating, you will make it a lot harder on yourself! And while initially these substitutes won't completely distract you from wanting to eat, eventually you will retrain yourself so that the first thing you think of when you experience these triggers is not "I want food", it "I want to [whatever]".

If you need ideas on things to do to "get a life", I'm sure fellow OOTers will have tonnes of suggestions. If your life consists of sleeping, eating, tv, internet and poker, you need to broaden your horizons! If you need to join some clubs at the local community center or Y, do it. You need to become a more well rounded invidual if you're going to be a less round individual!

Also, if you're in the "need to loose ~100 pounds or more category" you do not have to completely restrict your diet and start working out like a fiend to get results! When someone who is 150 pounds want to loose 10 pounds, that's a lot of work. For us to start loosing all we really need to do is normalise our diets and get a moderate amount of exercise. It will start to come off. Later you're likely going to need to ramp things up a little to keep going, but for getting started don't set yourself up to fail by putting together a plan that's impossible to follow.

(If this sounds like I've giving everyone a bunch of advice here, I'm really giving myself a bunch of advice here)
