El D, and all,
just wanted to chime in. Its 7:45 and ive done just about everything so far in this thread. Watched TV, Played poker, surfed the net, slept for about an hour and a half, ect ect. For the last three months i go on a cycle like this. Mke myself go to bed at midnight 2-3 days in a row. Day 4 push it back half an hour and watch AQHF. this merges into Inuyasha and Full metal alchemist after a few days. Surf other channels and the web for an hour or two end up going to sleep around 4am for a 2-3 week stretch. Then i'll find something on TV at 5-6 am, right now its ANgel on TNT at 6am, back to back. So instead of sleeping at 4-4:30ish i'm up till 8. Another week or two of this and its extended till 9 (flip through channels for half hour, take the dog out, load the dishwasher). Soon enough someone will call me at noon just as i'm going to sleep and i'll spend a few days getting back to sleep at midnight and it starts all over again. Since the new year i've been working out again, but i experience just what El D describes at the beginning of this thread where i'll fall alseep for an hour or two at the most and wake up (what happened today). |

tolbiny,
obviously if you've slept already tonight you're already exempt from this thread. |

I realized there are a few psychological reasons I do this:
I like the idea of going to sleep. Specifically, going to sleep and then of not having anything to do the next day. Actually sleeping ruins this experience/idea because then I will just wake up and not have really experienced the actual sleep, due to the unconscious state. In contrast, staying awake allows me to continue fantasizing about how great going to sleep will be. And finally going to sleep is even better, or just unavoidable which is also kind of cool. Another thing I do highly related to this is excessive snoozing. I love falling back asleep, not waking up. Just saying no to it. Falling back asleep like ten or more times. |

Diablo:
I love sleeping too, but I hate going to sleep. I feel ya dude. I'm exactly the same way. It's like I have so much I want to get done, but I end up sitting around on IRC or 2+2 or watching some stupid tv show. Next thing I know, it's 2am and I gotta get up in 4 hours. That blows ass. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I am 100% a night person. I hate mornings. Anyway, here's hoping you can get into a pattern and get good sleep bro. |

I have incredibly bad sleep habits and I know it kills productivity. I think part of the root cause in my case is it's the only time in the day when the world leaves me alone. No phones. No interruptions. The time is all mine. If I work I'm 100% more productive than I am during the work day. If I avoid work at least I'm alone with my thoughts and able to pursue 100% my own agenda. For example it's 4 AM now. If I work I will clear a ton of e-mails. If I go to bed, even if I get up at 6:30 to get the Boy off to school, or 10:00 if the hubby does it, I won't be productive again until at least mid-day. My brain just doesn't function well in the morning, (except in the case of a command performace, conference call, meeting, flight, etc.) Then there are the times when I'm sitting there with a ton of e-mails to read, yet find myself doing things like reading threads about sleeping on 2p2, searching out various minutiae. So for me, it's a mix of being uber productive late night hours and doing everything in my power to avoid the work stacked up. I'm pretty sure the non productive portion is connected with compulsiveness. For some reason we just can't let go. I am amazed that so many others suffer from the same affliction. The Poker Mom [/ QUOTE ]This explanation stands out among the many other familiar ones. The issue of increased nighttime productivity is an important one, though I'm glad to see that for others -- as for me -- it is often a case of merely lamenting a lack of productivity rather than actually getting things done. I consider myself to be something of an alone-person and enjoy the fact that between 10 PM and about 8AM, I can't reasonably be expected to do anything for anyone (including communicate with them). This makes me want to be awake for more of those hours (and conaequently, asleep for more of the hours when people do want things from me, however unlikely this may be). This all makes me wonder if the not-going-to-sleep thing is really just a manifestation of my desire not to be controlled or impacted by the decisions of others. Perhaps this one seemingly small decision is one of the few places we can exert a full measure of control over our actions and do what the hell we want to do . |

El Diablo I don't know what you do for a living but are you happy with your job?
I'm a systems engineer and I can often spend long, boring, seemingly pointless days at work. I have the same problem you described, but I've always attributed it to the fact that my work day was unfulfilling so I try and cram as much as possible into my life when I get home from work. |
