td: The complaints about the ending are obvious, starting with the rooftop scene - Leo's irrational choices, the shootings, the left-fieldness, and the needlessness of it all, in order to wrap it all up.
mindless: In this movie, there's no real reason for the 2nd mole to know. Dude: Leo didn't know where Marky Mark was. He told Anderson to bring Marky Mark, but he didn't. All: It's a shame we're talking about how the ending doesn't work, rather than the good things about the movie. That's Scorcese's fault, though, as he didn't give DiCaprio and Damon enough motivation for their choices. Straw poll: Who thought the ending rat shot was cheesy stupid, and who thought it was funny? |

Rat on the balcony with beacon hill and the golden dome of the state house in the background was funny.
its not like scorsese zoomed in on the rat and it winked or anything.... |

I thought the rat was funny. There is nothing wrong with a director showing a sense of humor.
BTW the left fieldness is definitely from the 2nd. mole. I was totally like WTF. Man they could have ended it with DiCaprio handing the letter to the shrink and that is it............ then that would be a mind [censored]. I am a seller of that ending. I really think it cheapened it. |

I think everyone is clearly in agreement that the 2nd mole is a deus ex machina in that Chase (24 represent) was in the movie for like 5 seconds and there was only minor mention of even the presence of a 2nd mole (which I pretty much assumed there was). It wasn't a "bad" ending, per se, just inexplicable. The movie was still great.

I can't imagine the black cop that DiCaprio called would have told anyone, either. [/ QUOTE ] I think this is what we are supposed to believe. |

[ QUOTE ]
I had a problem with how the second mole got presented in the departed. In IA there are hints at a second mole the entire time as you see him with Andy Lau's young character at teh begining when the crime boss is talking to the young soon to be in training cops. You also see the second mole get used a bit more in IA [/ QUOTE ] And yet it works just as poorly in IA. |

The ending in IA is easier to believe because of the fewer characters shoing up.
