ZBT and others, I think most of you vastly overestimate the influence of what particular individual happens to win the WSOP has on the growth of the game. [/ QUOTE ] Yes ... another example of where 2p2 members forget that they are the poker fringe. Most of the 30 or so guys who play in our monthly tournaments couldn't name anyone but Moneymaker ... yet, they donate monthly. |

They did leave out that he had played live cash games a LOT in the past. It is all about how ESPN pushes someone. ~Justin [/ QUOTE ] Which leads to ... how can ZBT or anyone know whether Gold will be good or not until we know how ESPN creates him? It really is up to ESPN ... they can make him out to be a great guy, or a jerk. I am guessing that you will hear very little of the table talk ... or at least none that will make him look like a tool. We have to remember that we saw the whole thing over 10 days, thousands of posts in dozens of sweat threads, and then 12 hours of PPV. We saw the unadulterated and unedited Gold (whom I happened to like). But what the people you are hoping will start playing poker because of the WSOP will see ... well, we have no idea. NCAces |

[ QUOTE ]
zbt, do you really think the early 20s male demographic needs to be further incited to play poker? every frat boy i know already plays poker. hell, look at the average age of 2p2. [/ QUOTE ] I am 47 and not offended by what you said. I do think you are wrong that this is a negative. I assure you that if you are looking for donks who you want at your tables with $500 they don't mind dropping for a night of fun, my age group can handle that better than some college kid or new graduate. If you look at it from pure marketing, what is the most desirable demographic for TV? It would be people in my age group that have substantial disposable income. I recognize that the younger crowd is the favored demographic for movies, clothes, mall-stuff, but when it comes to disposable income, you can't beat the 45 - 55 age group -- which, by the way, is what I think middle-aged is. Many in my age group would be turned off by those you think are desireable. Someone my age wants to know that I don't have to be 23 years old in order to survive the rigors of a 10 day tournament; or need to have a bunch of years to learn the game. Moreover, someone like Pralad would have been terrible if he had started to rap ... you think Gold's talking was bad ... let some of us who more than just hate rap hear that at a table and run in the opposite direction. Villians to some degree are great for a sport. If my Red Sox are out of it, I will watch any Yankees games to root against them.
It was them same way with Hellmuth and Matusow (although I kind of like them at times now). |

It is in their best interest to make Gold a good guy. They want the boom to continue. I can't see making him a jerk would be at all +EV for ESPN and WSOP. |

[ QUOTE ] Anyone old Anyone who didn't speak english Anyone who didn't want to represent the game Anyone rich Anyone who represented themself very poorly at the table Anyone who would cause "average people" to dislike them at the table. Jamie Gold is middle aged. [/ QUOTE ] This other stuff I don't care about but anyone who calls me "middle-aged" is going to be hunted down and destroyed with all the power an elite champion of poker can bring to bear. [/ QUOTE ] Great. |
