Bruschetta: Most people prounounce it bru-SHetta, but in fact it should be bru-SKetta.

Actually, both of these are acceptable.

I'm looking at all these words being listed, and I can honestly say that I know how to pronounce all of them. Except maybe the DuBois guy. I would say it with a silent S.

Rule of thumb: If you ever meet some black dude with this name, say "Da Boys." If you ever meet some French dude with this name, say "Doo Bwah."

Speaking with a bit of authority on this subject, the S is silent even in the Americanzed version. Maybe because I grew up in Illinois and we don't say "Ill-i-noise". However, for reasons I cannot explain, I actually use both Doo Bwah and Da Boy with roughly the same frequency, so you might want to dismiss the opnion of someone who apparently can't decide how to pronounce their own name.

I always said ess-fur instead of ess-eff-er. Actually I'm not sure which is correct.

It's only acceptable if an incorrect pronounciation can become acceptable via incessant use. (In fact, it can and does, so I suppose you're right.)

I've met many people who can't seem to pronounce "Massachusetts". I think they're being lazy. It's not that hard.

[/ QUOTE ]

for the longest time I've pronounced it "Taxachusetts". Woops.
