As a Leafs fan I have been critical of JFJ, however I don't feel we overpaid for anyone. If McCabe or Kubina didn't go to the Leafs they would be getting similar money elsewhere. Chara did get overpaid.

Triumph I'm assuming the Elias comment was sarcastic.

Keep thinking your Leafs' are godsends...

[/ QUOTE ]

Where does Zurvan suggest they are godsends he said they signed two good contracts they now have good defense, but still won't be a Stanley Cup caliber team. It's not like he's saying "ZOMG Pavel Kubina will win the Norris Trophy best signing EVAR, LEAFS WILL WIN THE CUP"

bluefox

Please notice where I said the Leafs aren't going to win the Cup this year. They made a couple good signings, and improved their team.

As for how much Chara was being offered, that was a matter of discussion on Sportsnetnews yesterday evening, just before I opened the thread. They're generally pretty reliable with information, and that's what they had to say.

Uh, I'm a Devils fan, so no, it wasn't.

McCabe was never on the open market to begin with - why couldn't they get McCabe to take a lil' discount to stay in Toronto? Something like 5.25 for 5 years?

If McCabe hadn't signed, he would've been a UFA on Saturday. By all accounts, the only teams McCabe would take a discount to play for are the New York area teams, since that's where his wife wanted to go. I don't have a big problem with the amount of the contract, the length would be only area I'd criticize.

Other news:

In addition to Jovanovski, he Canucks lost Nolan Baumgartner (who went to the Flyers). They've signed Willie Mitchell (from Minnesota), who's an upgrade from Baumgartner at least. Be interesting to see whether the Canucks can resign Anson Carter, he's the only player to really click with the Sedins but they can't afford to offer him anywhere close to what the Sedins are getting. Of course, finding a top line right-winger is also a priority.

This guy hit it on the head...

"And just what the hell was Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr thinking when he signed Pavel Kubina to a four year, $20 million contract? Kubina's a good defenceman but he hasn't done anything in his career to suggest he's worth $5 million per season.

It was also puzzling that "JFJ" went after Kubina when he already has two offensive blueliners in Bryan McCabe and Tomas Kaberle eating up over $10 million in cap space.

But then Ferguson compounded the problem by signing slow-footed Hal Gill, who couldn't even stick with a rebuilding Boston Bruins club, to a three year, $6.3 million contract.

$2.1 million per season? For Hal Gill? Sorry, but he's not a good defensive blueliner in today's NHL, and certainly not at that price."

Pronger's stock isn't going anywhere if he demands a trade to specific teams.

[/ QUOTE ]

Prongers not going to tell Kevi Lowe which team. He is lucky Lowe trades him at all. His stock just keeps going up with all the defensive signings and contracts.

Arnott signs with Nashville deal worth 5 years $4.5 mil a year.

Elias for $6 mil a year is definately worth it, this may be the best steal in UFA this year. 7 years may be a year or two long though.

$6m for Elias is a steal. He probably took it so he doesn't have to move and can sit on his ass for 7 years. Well, I hope so

$6m for Elias is a steal. He probably took it so he can be captain of the Devils and go to the playoffs every year :

[/ QUOTE ]

7 years is a year too long but Elias exchanged dollars for years + a no-movement clause. The Devils cannot waive or trade him. Elias is a borderline HOFer - I think the lockout, two weak seasons, and his bout with hepatitis might've sunk his shot to make it, but I hope he and Brodeur are elected in the same class.
