it's an advanced guide because of the stuff a beginning player would find useful???

I didn't get that either.

Oh, and I can go without ever again hearing or reading, "Take it/you to the next level," for the rest of time.

I just had a book in me that I decided to get out. (I am of the opinion that we all have a story to tell.)

Chess is much easier to present in that format, as in those positions in BFTC, there is one best move. In poker, there are many variables (which of course would be listed in the problem). I do like the idea, and I would recommend as good reading Roy Cooke's Real Poker II: The Play of Hands. Cooke takes us through his thought processes during various hands. As a micro-limit player, seeing the thoughts of a successful middle limit player as a hand progresses was eye opening.

It's a different kind of book which is not as mathematical and a bit more biographical than most.
Let's put it this way the newbie is going to understand more from Phils book that HE for AP

Just for the record I read both of these books (H4AP twice) before ever fliping over my first card and I can say for sure that i used many more of the concepts in H4AP than in Helmuth's book even though the FLT $0.05/0.10 game at pokerstars where I started is hardly the type of game that H4AP is intended for.

That beeing said I think there are some useful, interesting and as far as I know unique concepts in playing poker like the pros for total beginers. His idea to start up playing super-duper thight (basicly just premium hands) and then adding more and more hands as you get better is in my oppinion essentially correct for someone who has never played poker before. (I would however guess that this market segment is rather small, most people probably foolishly try on their own before turning to books to learn the game.)

But there are now reviews, some of which have appeared here, that are quite critical of it and I can't dispute the complaints these reviews represent.

It mostly deals with those psychological holes, and in many cases not in extreme depth, that stop pretty good playes back from beginning great players.

I would say in nearly all casesthe material was terribly shallow. That's what disappointed me. So many times I would read a chapter and feel like he'd introduced me to what would follow...but then there would be nothing except the next chapter on a new topic!
