I'm not married to Nf3 but how about some b5 analysis? what are you trying to accomplish? why is better than the knight move?

[ QUOTE ] 44. g5?! Nf3 45. Bf6 b5! Maybe now is the time.... [/ QUOTE ] What am I missing? Doesn't 46. Kc5, lose the pawn? [/ QUOTE ] The main point of Nf3 (at least in my head) is that he's not able to play f4. So the g pawn is just hanging in the wind. Yes 46. Kc5 drops the pawn and we don't care as we just want squares to advance our king. (example but maybe not best) 44. g5 Nf3 45. Bf6 b5 (he also has 45. Be3) 46. Kc5 Ke6 47. Kxb5 Kf5 The pawn has to drop and our king and knight are way better positioned than his K & B, good enough to win? Hmmmm.. maybe not... but we should be in the driver seat... Playing 44.... b5 may also be good but it does allow f4 and we don't have the same weakness at g5. Possibly f4 is not good and we get others stuff, but from a brain cell point of view 44... Nf3 was more forced and easier to follow... |

True we can't stop his king from getting back and even if we gain the opposition I assume its a draw. I'm sure if we are crafty we could play for a win in this position and LOSE.... Which path do you prefer pushing the b pawn? I don't think 44...b5 changes much. 45.f5 b4 might be good for us, but he has other moves. 45.Bc3 Nf3 46.Bf6 b4 47.Kc4 is the same as the 44...Nf3 line above. [/ QUOTE ] |

[/ QUOTE ] After 46...Ke6 it will be very similar to the lines we have already discussed, unless he tries to vary with 47.g4 but that's just bad. 47...Nh2 48.Kxb5 Nxg4 49.Bd4 Kf5 and now he has to lose another pawn. Even with all this he still has very good drawing chances by running his king back to e2 (the idea is to trade pawns when we try to create a passer, then sacrifice his bishop for our last pawn). I'd gladly take it over whatever else we might be able to get, but it just shows how hard it is for White to make a mistake big enough to lose the game. |
