f3 forking the bishop and pawn and preventing him from protecting the G5 pawn with f4. if he protects the pawn and bishop by moving it to e3 that gives us a better chance to scoot the b pawn toward promotion.

44. g5!?
I'm surprised to see this I must be a fish? He's fixed the pawn on the same color has his bishop. I'm OK with that.. Yes I like Nf3 also, he's got two squares Be3 and Bf6. [ QUOTE ] gives us a better chance to scoot the b pawn toward promotion. [/ QUOTE ] I agree but... let's change the concept a bit. We will never promote the b pawn, not going to happen. However the "threat" of promoting the pawn can take his king away from the defense of the kingside pawns. 44. g5?! Nf3 45. Bf6 b5! Maybe now is the time.... |

So how do we possibly win at this point? It seems we have to push the b pawn at some point to drive the king away. But after that I don't see how we have enough time to take his pawns and defend our own

[ QUOTE ]
What am I missing? Doesn't 46. Kc5, lose the pawn? [/ QUOTE ] It does, but I think the idea is that it opens up moving our K from e6 to f5 and then going to town on his remaining pawns. TimM (I think) mentioned a while back that this was our best plan -- the b pawn is best used as a distraction while our real goal is to clean out his kingside pawns and queen one of those. I'm not saying moving the b pawn is right now, just that that's what the "idea" was, as I understand it. I wouldn't be surprised if curtains played g4 at some point, to box our king in. In fact, if we end up on this line: 44. ... b5 45. Kc5 Ke6 46. g4 ...I'm not sure we'll really be able to maneuver around and do a lot of damage. We also have Ne4+ forking K and pawn if he moves Kc5, but I think that doesn't work out well for us either. |
