Tales of a Scorched Earth is heavier than anything by Metallica [/ QUOTE ] wtf? so I'll admit that I haven't heard this album, but have you actually heard any of the pre-MTV metallica? no one is talking about "load", "st anger" or the black album when they are talking about metallica. |

The ultimate American band is of course, Grand Funk Railroad. [/ QUOTE ] Nobody knows the band 'Grand Funk'? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong rattling bass of Mel Shocker? The competent drum work of Don Brewer? Oh, man! For more information on Grand Funk, consult your school library! |

I think, perhaps, you have no clue what you are talking about. 1979 is whiny? It's pop music. Snail is angsty? It's shoegaze. Tales of a Scorched Earth is heavier than anything by Metallica and Whir is folk music. Just because you hear Bullet With Butterfly Wings and you watch MTV news doesn't mean you should offer your opinion when it's obviously an uneducated one. Just saying. [/ QUOTE ] I think perhaps I own every album they ever released, even that steaming pile of donkey [censored] that was Iha's solo record. They were a decent 90's rock band. They could play loud, and also not so loud. They are not top 5 all time. |

Tales of a Scorched Earth is heavier than anything by Metallica [/ QUOTE ] If by heavier you mean the vocals are more distorted then sure. How do you define Heavy? Battery is surely heavier. Seek and Destroy? Whiplash? |

FWIW, Glenn Miller really shouldn't make a list like this... They weren't innovative or the greatest band of the era even, but they do have some great recordings.
Also, this list is too hard for me to even try to come up with a top 5, but know that there would be at LEAST Duke Ellington and Count Basie on that list. |

I'm surprised at all the REM love. At one point I was able to snag every album they had, so I grabbed it all. And found myself skipping over most of it. I have pretty wide taste, but even if I just don't like that particular band, are they even that influential? What great bands are sitting around saying, "Man, we owe a lot to Michael Stype?"
