This thread was not about eliminating all traffic laws or removing the speed limit. The question was don't you think that taking a picture and sending it to your home saying pay this ticket you were speeding, is a violation of our personal freedom? Face it the government is getting to big and controlling. It is a fact and there is no arguing this.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with you, and that is one of the reasons I subscribe to this blog which deals with the politics of driving.

Have you read any of my posts in other threads?

[ QUOTE ]
Will you all of a sudden drive like a dangerous and reckless person if these camera's are removed and police stop doing speed traps?

[/ QUOTE ]
What if we removed all speed limits? And laws against driving drunk? Can't I decide how fast I want to go on any given street or how many shots I should be allowed to slam before hitting the road? Can't have anyone controlling what we do, can we? Who do they think they are???

Make no mistake, I'm an ACist, and would like to see the roads owned privately. And if the owner of a particular road wants to set up a camera every 6 feet, I say have at it. I might not use his road if I'm in a hurry somewhere, but I have nothing against the concept of a speeding camera.

[/ QUOTE ]

You didn't answer my question.

[/ QUOTE ]
No, I won't drive like a maniac, but I would probably drive faster almost all the time.

Maybe you can answer my question of why there should be any traffic laws.

[/ QUOTE ]

I would prefer to see police taken out of the equasion with respect to trafic laws unless they happen to see something dangerous and reckless and actually unsafe. I would like them to be focused on violence and property crimes. And I am very against this notion of camera's in public to monitor humans going about their affairs, and in particular ones specifically designed to issue citations.

It reminds me of that corny Sylvester Stalone/Sandra Bullock movie when they are cops in the future and little atm type machines issue citations for swearing and the like. We are either going in that direction or away from that direction, I would like to move away from that direction.

I think private drivers insurance would be a reasonable way to exercise social control on humans driving and dangerousness. Accidents and you pay more, safe record you pay less. What is wrong with keeping the 'speed limit' signs and removing the enforcement exept in rare circumstances of dangerousness?

Um I was being facetious.

Getting rid of publicly funded roads and letting the free market do it's thing is sounding better now isn't it?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because there's nothing stopping the private owner of a road from taking your picture from a van and issuing you a citation if he deems your driving inappropriate. Yep. Privatization fixes everything.

[/ QUOTE ]
Speeding cameras are not inheritantly a problem. But if enough people think this is a problem, there won't be speeding cameras, do you see why?

[/ QUOTE ]

Lol, wtf does this even mean? If enough people believe cameras are a problem now, there won't be cameras. Do you see why?

What is the difference, if anything CCTVs will stop more serious crimes such as robbery's, assault, drug dealing etc...
It is a slippery slope. If you can justify taking pictures of speeders, then how do you support protecting other criminals from being monitored on the streets?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, for one thing, CCTVs have infinitely more potential for nefarious use than speeding cameras.

[/ QUOTE ]

Care to explain? Also how are they not in the same category but on different degrees?

[/ QUOTE ]

A CCTV camera system could be used to keep constant track of the location of every citizen. It could be used to monitor political activity. It could be used to collect evidence to blackmail people over having affairs.

A guy in the back of a van with a camera can... take pictures of cars.

Umm, oops -- I plucked your comment out of a reply.

That exact phrase makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Apologies.

I didn't say it was a problem, but it's the same situation about which the OP was complaining, and shake seemed to suggest would be "fixed" with private roads.

[/ QUOTE ]
Well, that's not what I was attempting to suggest. Just read my second post, the one right after the one you quoted. Road owners would have to have there roads accurately reflect driver's preferences in order to maximize profit. If that includes speeding cameras so be it. There is not anything inheritantly wrong with speeding cameras, especially if you're using them to make sure people are obeying the rules on your property and they have been informed of such.

So your belief is that it's oppression for you to use someone's property in a way expressly forbidden by the person and then to be punished for that misuse via a means of which you were previously aware (in this case, a ticket)?
