Thank God you've stepped in to tell us the proper way to think and how things should be. I'd be lost without your guidance.

I'm not telling you how to think at all. Where did you get that? You seem to have a problem with people expressing their opinions when they're different from yours.

Am I being majorly leveled here?

Okay, but do you understand why some men might feel uncomfortable showering with gay men, or do you think that's completely ridiculous?

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course I understand why some men would be uncomfortable. But it shouldn't be the job of society to tailor everything to fit the comfort level of the more intolerant/fearful/ignorant members.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have showered publicly during team sports many many times in school and never thought twice of it, including conversing etc.

The other day an unknown man was looking at me at the gym down there (and not just a glance, either), and it creeped me out.

If hes gay, I don't care, but staring at me is not acceptable. I strongly suspect any gay at the pro level has enough intelligence to not stare at other men's privates.

[ QUOTE ]

As for straight men and women showering together, I'd say we're probably no more than 30 years away from that being the norm. It's funny that whenever you see some movie that takes place in the future, they always have men and women using the same locker rooms because people have finally gotten mature about that (for example, Robocop, Aliens, Starship Troopers).

[/ QUOTE ]

I think this is much more in line with why slasher movies involve naked chicks than a commentary on future humans.

No. The point of my post is that I'm ok with -- and grateful for -- Hardaway voicing his views in public. I like engaging in this debate. I expressed my opinions and backed them up. You disagree with them so you interpret me as telling you how to think.

You're not being leveled, you're just being conservative.

Well, you seem to think that anyone who is uncomfortable showering with the opposite sex or homosexuals is ignorant and unenlightened, and by implication inferior to you, because you don't care if gay guys are checking out your schlong.

But I don't think you're enlightened or superior, just less modest. Being modest and not wanting people leering at you in the shower is not a character flaw, it's normal human behavior.

I don't care why the filmmakers intended those scenes -- of course Verhoeven and Cameron want to titillate; and nothiing about those movies is remotely realistic anyway. The point is that it's considered a plausible scenario in the future. As races became integrated in bathrooms around the 1950s and '60s, sexes will become intergrated in bathrooms probably 100 years after that.

[/ QUOTE ]

my undergrad had coed bathrooms. I went to conference in Sweden that had coed bathrooms.

but showering together is a far step from that.

also, "b/c it might be cool in 100 years" isn't a great reason to say something should be cool today.

also, Starship Troopers had a commander whose entire strategy was to attack the universes most fearsome bugs with huge lines of troops and hand held guns instead of, you know, dropping bombs on them from the planes that they were already in.

Well, you seem to think that anyone who would be uncomfortable showering with someone who might be checking them out sexually is ignorant and unenlightened, and by implication inferior to you, because you don't care if gay guys are checking out your schlong.

[/ QUOTE ]

The only reason I used the word "ignorant" (and I admit maybe that came across too harsh) is that a lot of homophobes are under the mistaken assumption that all gay men want to have sex with them. It's that type of ignorance that causes their discomfort while showering. If they knew that gay men don't just go around mindlessly screwing all naked asses that cross their visual paths (furthermore, if they knew that a large percentage of gay men don't have anal sex at all), they might not be as worried when they drop the soap.

But if you're just talking about modesty, then yes -- it's not ignorance. But if you're modest, you are probably modest showering around other straight men too. My point is that if you're comfortable being naked around other naked men, it shouldn't matter what their sexual orientation is, because they're not so primitive as to jump all over you when you drop the soap.

not anywhere near 100% feel this way. but sexual attraction is a natural thing, and it's natural that some of these guys are going to be attracted to me. roughly to the same degree that woman are attracted to me, which isn't much, but it's something.

I'm not sure I understand the point of this entire back-and-forth argument. Are some of you actually suggesting that gay people should have separate locker rooms? I mean, just think about it practically...I don't think they're going to start building 4 locker rooms in every stadium just because some people feel uncomfortable.

If I've misinterpreted, and nobody is suggesting this...then it doesn't really matter if anyone is uncomfortable or not, right? The only difference is that you could potentially know if someone gay is showering next to you, vs. the current situation (which is that it has certainly happened and continues to happen, you just don't know when/who).

Actually I think pretty much everyone knows this guy is gay by now:
