I had no idea about this. I just assumed they blocked personal email as a way to increase productivity, I guess I never thought of it as a security-related measure.

about the interview process,

first I had a phone interview with a tech guy to make sure i was a smart boy.

After i passed that interview I got a second phone interview with a programmer/engineer and another call shortly by a differnt programmer (total time on the phone that day with google = 4hrs +

After that i had my final interview which involved six or seven programmers doing 30-45 minute interviews each.

I found out yesterday by complete accident that typing g + enter in Firefox sends you to the gmail home page. Something to think about...

sleeted,

Google is in the process of setting up a data center here in Phoenix that should employ 600-1200 people. Everyone in technology is humping their leg to get in the door. But I know an ex-google recruiter who said that the hours were brutal. I'm interested in seeing how long the honeymoon lasts.

Also, their hiring cycle is ridiculous - six months sometimes, from what I hear. I was also told that there are some really odd restrictions to getting in the door formal education-wise. Input is appreciated.

Can't access any outside email from work.

[/ QUOTE ]

Seriously, where do you work? China?

Everyone I know that works at a financial services firm has the same restriction. I know people at Goldman, Lehman, Credit Suise and a few others that can only check work email.

[/ QUOTE ]

Why? Afraid you'll discuss secrets on the other e-mail?

Exactly. Material non-public information.

The regulators actually require that all e-mail be logged and they can't log your personal account so it's denied.

As Daver already mentioned, company email is logged while outside email isn't. His example of a trader was good, as were others that mentioned discussing any private information. I don't have access to anything that would really matter to anyone here, but there are still things that my company doesn't want to be public and it's a lot harder to tell if someone's published them if you allow access to outside email accounts.
