I read the entire article with interest. By the way, I used to have the older Fowler's (second edition) but someone pinched it at work. I now own the revised third edition (by R.W. Burchfield). From which I quote:

"At the present time, especially in written English, there is abundant evidence for the use of an before habitual, historian, historic(al), and horrendous, but the choice of form remains open."

The same book makes reference to an hotel, as "now old-fashioned". Thus, I assume you love this quaint expression like a brother.

I would like to add a word of chastisement. The party is almost over and the majority are past out or too drunk to appreciate much and you finally show up late with a $240 bottle of Champagne and expect everyone to rejoice. Not only is your timing poor, you English Professors ain't never learnt much have yawl.

As for the topic of the thread, my wife and I saw the film last night, and I have to say it was the most boring 7 hours of my life. About a third of the way through I found myself looking at my watch and thinking, "Can we pick up the pace a bit? We have a lot of people to kill."

No wonder you were bored, you must have watched 4 hours of those advertisements before it started.

He may be dead; or, he may be teaching English. - Cormac MaCarthy

Cormac is past out; not, passed out. I just wanted to get that straighted out.

I discovered the above poisonous quote while smoking a Cuban cigar, eating mint chip ice cream, and reading " The Book of Poisonous Quotes", compiled by Colin M. Jarman.

If you had an sense of humor, you would have posted "a explanation."

Does the McCarthy quote explain his presence or absence?

andy,

I just wanted to point out that there are some interesting opinions in the OOT thread about this movie regarding whether the wife of the Dutch whore-assassin is hotter. I think it is clearly the Dutch whore-assassin.

I'm not sure. I'm almost passed out.

Besides, I learned long ago not to engage in a too involved discussion with dangerous word experts. I usually end up wounded, most often self-inflicted, or tripping into a hole, or running into a brick wall.

While I agree with your who's hotter assessment, I disagree with your assertion that there are some interesting opinions on OOT.
