Default Re: Take a Look at 2+2\'s Future Design

I used to want sigs so I could have some smart-alecky thing to say at the bottom of each post.

But when I look at other forums that have sigs I think they are really distracting and annoying. Probably because I'm just used to 2+2 with no sigs. But it just seems like they lengthen every thread unnecessarily and make them more difficult to navigate.

There is one forum I'm on that has a pretty tiny font at the very bottom for the sigs. And these don't seem to be nearly as distracting.
You get to post your little smart-alecky thing AND it doesn't confuse any reader into thinking it is somehow part of their post (which is what it looks like on other forums).

To my knowledge, the original reason for banning the sigs was because too many were using it for spam and rakeback ads, etc.
Well, that was also before we had 100 or so moderators patrolling around too. I don't think the original reason is relevant anymore because anyone with spam in their sig is going to be noticed by a mod pretty quickly.

So that leaves us with the question of whether the sigs take up too much space I guess.
Not sure whether they do or don't, especially in the new design.
But I've definitely learned to live without them and think it's easier to have the whole thread in front of you relatively distraction-free.

Bob,

Bottom line, I don't think anyone "looks forward" to reading signatures. They're often quotes that make no sense out of context to people, they're often other random things that are meaningless to most but above all they're ALWAYS distracting.

I can't imagine anyone who would lobby for signatures or who actually likes reading them. Avatars and to a lesser degree undertitles and Loc:s do a fine enough job of giving a poster his own identity without needing to bog down threads with signatures.

EDIT: I guess that was just a long-winded way of saying "I agree".

Signatures are the worst forum invention ever. Complete waste of space and interrupt the viewing line between posts way too much. It should be easy to read a forum.

The newest archives are using the design which 2+2 will change to in April.

Please offer you comments on the new look.

[/ QUOTE ][puts philosophical hat on]
People tend to look back, through the fog of time, with benign neglect, if not outright fondness, at a past that was unpleasant -- such as the schoolyard where they got a hiding as kids, etc. For example, I remember fondly the vomit-colored cover of Don Schlesinger's "Blackjack Attack", first edition. Lousy cover, excellent content.
[/removes hat, scratches head top]

What I mean is I'm screen-saving the current look of 2+2 for future generations to be amazed at with.

Signatures in forums are terrible. They're just clutter and often end up being longer than the actual post.

Please keep having signatures disabled.

Also, the top link in every post, maybe move it or remove it completely so that the white space is removed even more.

What's with the comment submit button and the My Stuff (presumably preferences) links not working?

Rather silly to be using javascript for that stuff, I think.

It is back to the old place, with the new stuff: http://archiveserver.twoplustwo.com/ubbthreads.php

I wish I could click on Views and Replies to sort instead of the dropdown and agree with other posters about whitespace issues.
