I'm really spending a lot of time learning how to incorporate finger picking into my guitar playing. I've been playing for a few years and I can pretty much play any rhythm if given the chords and I hear the song. But I struggle in songs where the guitarist is picking individual strings. This is very difficult and I feel like I'm learning all over again. [/ QUOTE ] Yea, with some of the stuff I'm playing I'll be in dropped D and I've had the most trouble keeping the thumb playing one simple drone type rhythm alternating on the 4th and 6th string while doing something completely different with the other fingers. It's tough but once you start to get the hang of it the sound is awesome. Definitely adds a more complete sound, but as you said it feels like learning a different instrument. |

I'm trying to learn to play the piano. My wife got me a Yamaha digital piano for my birthday about a month ago. I didn't have lessons as a kid, but I took a one-semester piano class during my undergrad--fulfilled a core requirement. I'm finding I remember most of what I learned, and I'm already well ahead of where I was at the end of that semester. It's pretty fun... I figure I'll see what I can do on my own for a little while, and then get some lessons when I don't think I'm progressing much.

James, my rating is over 1600. [/ QUOTE ] Cool. It's a game I'm learning to love even though I still make brutal errors relatively often. I'm learning from resident chess expert J_V so I don't think 1400-1500 would be outside the realm of possibility in the next year if I stick with it. 2nd your recommendation on Silman. His book "The Amateur's Mind" is an amazing book that even a total beginner like me can wrap his mind around(as long as you dont mind pulling out the board to visualize things). James |

studying classical guitar. I take lessons from a flamenco/classical player, she's really great and I have learned a lot since I started playing. plus it just feels great to play a bach cello suite on the guitar. also studying pak mei kung fu, although I really want to start boxing soon in addition. I have been talking about this forever and really need to just do it. We do a lot of sparring in kung fu though (actually have a black eye right now), and that's my favorite part of it. other hobbies are reading and composing music, neither of which I've been doing enough of. also I have been learning ruby on rails which is a programming language+framework, really great for banging out web applications quickly. on a work related front, I've been learning aspect oriented programming techniques, and getting up to speed on new features in java 1.5. also relearning a bunch of charlie parker solos I forgot how to play on guitar. [/ QUOTE ] damn turnip, you have a lot of stuff on your plate. i thought you were doing music stuff with most of your time? how's your marriage going, is it bliss? - maybe she gives you inspiration and so much energy to do so much. |

[ QUOTE ] Trying to learn Spanish. I bought Rosetta Stone so we'll see how well that goes. [/ QUOTE ] I would love to read what you think about this product. I suck at languages but feel a void being mostly monolingual (can speak/read some Thai from my time there). Curious how good Rosetta Stone stuff is. KJS [/ QUOTE ] i bought a $150 rosette stone software for chinese and thought it was absolutely useless |
