I have this problem too -
here are some things I have done to help the problem, but in no way cures it, as i am writing this post at 3:15am and I have a meeting at 8am:
1) drink some scotch - puts me right to bed
2) do your woman - or jerk off when you don't have one - you get tired real quick

I have had this problem forever, and it has REALLY gotten worse since I started smoking weed regularly. I find it almost impossible to sleep now if I don't smoke..

if you smoke before you go to bed, this can also be because you associate smoking with part of your going to bed ritual.

fwiw i spent i made it about a month where i smoked every day before going to bed and only got 4-5 hours of sleep a night, and actually waking up and feeling refreshed. after that though i just got too tired to sleep that little.

Yeah, I know exactly what you're saying about not sleeping too long but sleeping really well. If I don't smoke before I go to sleep, I'll wake up about 10 hours later and feel like crap. If I do smoke, I'll wake up in about 6-7 hours and feel awesome. WTF is wrong with me...

Great topic.

I've had this problem also. I think I know the reason tho. If I haven't achieved anything in the day (standard for me) I feel like going to bed would be acknowledging that my day was just a waste. By staying awake, there is subconsciously the hope that i will actually do something useful today. Being a lazy couch potatoe this never materialises and I stay awake till exhaustion. I find that if i wake up early and do something of my day I'm in bed by 10 p.m.

As to oversleeping, I have a problem with that as well. I've noticed that it only happens when i have things to do that don't interest me in the day. If I'm about to do something fun/interesting that day I wake up easy.

I've been surfing 2+2 for the past hour, telling myself, "wtf, go to sleep, [censored]."

Then I came across this thread, and cried tears of joy at discovering I'm not alone in this dark, miserable world.

Just kidding about the tears part, but I seriously did think it was just me.

i do this all the time, and i also hate waking up immediately. i think i have severe inertia regarding my status of wakefulness. i'm glad it sounds like i'm not the only one.

fp: "but there should be a certain time when you are the most tired throughout the day, and so you should just "try" to lay down then!!" You clearly don't have this problem, and therefore can't understand it. What you say sounds logical and of course makes sense. But here's the thing. We know when we are like that. And we KNOW we should go to sleep. Yet we don't.

chez: "Doesn't sound like the problem is sleep related. Sounds like a work problem." False. FYI, I think yours was the worst post (maybe the only genuinely bad one) in this thread.

Jared: "There have been stretches where I wind up going to bed at 3-4 and don't actually fall asleep until probably 6 or 7. I generally have a ton of [censored] running through my head and can't seem to stop it." As I mentioned somewhere, I have had this happen at times, but this happens specifically when I am dealing with a lot of complex unresolved relationship or business stuff. "Your favorite Sevillista" Hmmm... That may be true, but I'm not sure, I made a lot of friends when I was there!

It's 4:55am and I'm posting in this thread cos I don't want to go to sleep. Ugh. Maybe I'll have another bagel.

I have lots of theories about this, the most obvious ones are

not enough exercise,
tv/internet are physiologically not just psychologically addictive,
fear of being alone,
etc

most likely explanation IMO is 70-80% entertainment addiction & 20-30% insufficient exercise.

i wonder if it also may have something to do with having a flexible schedule and thus not having to get up at a set time most mornings. like, a natural tendency of the body to take out waking time on credit.

Is a trip report expected if I try both of these right now?
