Strassa,

Best wishes to you with whatever job you take. I'm glad to hear that you have been offered jobs like that with a sub 3gpa. I am an econ major at oberlin and am in a similar situation in terms of grades, and it gives me some hope that I can still land something decent after college.

SH,

"it's still hell because you have to put in so many hours" All the bankers I've known had to put in insane hours their first few years. The traders/market makers I know never had to put in insane hours like that.

Jason,
Good decision, imo. I'm one year ahead of you in school (recent grad) and in some ways I wish I had taken my wall street offer. What some people don't realize is that for highly motivated and intelligent people, living the poker life isn't all it's cracked up to be. It isn't very stimulating to sit around all day and do nothing, even if you are making 7 figs a year.

I still get laughed at today by people who tell me a business I started over a year ago will never make me as much money as playing poker would. I was in a similar situation as I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and wanted to get some experience doing so. You will need to get experience trading, so taking a pay cut for a few years is just a means to the very lucrative end. Many people will tell you what you are doing is foolish, but it sounds like you are pretty happy/excited with your decision.

Send me an IM if you want to talk about the situation some more. Good luck to you, here's to being non-poker friends in 5 years.

tc

So this is basically a dream job? Am I missing the catch somewhere? How much do you think Strassa will be making in 5 years if you had to guess Diablo?

DB,

"I just think its silly for el diablo to call me out like that since he barely knows me."

I am familiar enough with your poker and other posts to have an opinion on how smart you are. I have also read enough of your posts to know that you are pursuing things like real estate. Those are among the things that I took into account when making my statement.

"lol...pull out a # and ill double it if he takes this job"

Deal. How about we agree on a good return vehicle and I put 500k into it, you put 1M into it, and we then put it in escrow like a trust fund. Winner get the whole pot in 10 years. Note that I will want to make a small handful of carveouts from the final tally - lottery wins, inheritance, etc.

ok - first i think this thread belongs in QLC, but whatever.

second, i think the dollar figures being thrown around are a little retarded. my best friend went to wharton undergrad and also got his mba at wharton - in both schools he won an award for being the number one finance student. he was at goldman for 8 yrs or so and is probably one of the best young traders in the world. trading currency options, he and 2 other traders - one in hong kong and one in london netted the firm an avg of $190mm/yr for the last 4 yrs he was at gs. he's 33 and makes in the range of 2.5mm-3.5mm/yr and was never made an md. he's also very skilled socially and a really honest, tough and fair guy.

he left gs last year for one of the other big banks and is making about the same there.

my point is, this guy is sick good - probably better than nearly anyone here could ever aspire to be - and his numbers are lower than what is being thrown around very casually here. also of importance is that the big banks are often not meritocracies, and political crap/bad timing can leave you relatively effed.

i think real jobs are better than poker generally speaking, i just don't want all of you guys who lack real world experience to set unrealistic expectations and then be disappointed.
