since tennis is the new hot topic, here are a few poker players that are actually quite good tennis players.
patrick antonius gus hansen david grey mason malmuth david benyamine tennis betting is very popular and some of the best gambling around. I have played $1000 sets with chairs all over my side of the court. One time had to play with a racketball racket. But the throwing one is by far the most fun. Points are entertaining and you have to see it to believe what goes down. |

diablo lets get together and hit some balls and come up with a great handicap. the throwing one is very fun and very tough. if you live in vegas, give me a call. 702 325 8052 I was the highest ranked player on the team, was a singles All-American, but played #4 the year we won the NCAA's. Lot of people complained it was a stack, which it was, but we got the title. In the pros I was very successful at doubles, won 14 pro tournaments and got up to 150 in the world. [/ QUOTE ] if yer not old now, and still in decent practice, I would think you will smoke Gus. Question is, could you beat VVP? I heard he offered Strassa like 100-1 to play him, ( i don't think Strassa is a competitive level tennis player, however. ), Maybe you could sucker him in! Man, I do not know why people think it is easy to win vs someone who is throwing. I feel like I could beat a mediocre opponent on my first try doing that (note: I am NOT a good tennis player, high-school level)
Let first assume the hitter does not have a killer serve, usually a pretty safe bet if they did not play college level. So we can catch the serve a lot of the time. Now, for one example, we throw it back over the net similar to a drop shot. We can probably place it pretty well throwing it so the hitter will ahve to run for it. Also we can probably get a fairly dead bounce, close to the net. So if the hitter cant get to the ball before it is well below the net we are going to have a decent chance to catch the next shot pretty clsoe to the net. Now the hitter is dead, he is near then net and the thrower is near the net with the ball. Pretty easy put away for the thrower - remeber, it will be pretty easy to hit the lines and such throwing the ball. Also, the angles you can throw at would be awesome since the thrower can make the release point anywhere (vs. the hitter who must hit the ball in motion). I think if the thrower has the ball almost anywhere within the lines on the court, he has the hitter in pretty bad position. Clearly the hitter must really try hard to keep the catcher out of such positions. So the hitter would want to play a sort of serve and volley game. But again the thrower could pretty easily do a lob throw to the baseline, so that wont work. I would imagine that the hitter will frequently serve and then come to the service line and play in the middle a lot in order to keep pressur eon the thrower, that is where it should get interesting. All that said, I think it would be pretty tough on the thrower when he was serving. The hitter clearly needs to get all over that throw. That said, with some practice there are probably some good tricks the thrower can come up with to get some reasonable serve returns to handle. I think this facet of the game would be most challenging for the thrower. Anyway, pretty solid hitters could clearly make it a good match. If the hitter can rip most shots pretty well the thrower may be in trouble. But versus more average oppoenents who's shots can be caught somewhat frequently, I would put the thrower at a huge advantage. (i.e. I am quite certain if I were the hitter, I would get absolutely creamed) |

question for nick about the throwing...can you fake? i mean, with ball in hand, wind up and fake throw down left line but not release ball, quickly turn and throw down right line?
Also, must you catch in only 1 hand, or is 2 handed catches ok? And do you have to catch it clean? What if it bounces off your hand, can you scoop it up real quick, or is that lost point? This actually intrigues me, would be great to watch. I'm going to get a tennis buddy to go with me tomorrow and try this out, i'll have us both play sans racket. Hope to get rules clarification before we try |

as long as you catch it before it bounces. but intentional bobbling and moving closer to the net is not allowed. you can catch with 1 or 2 hands. you can fake throw as many times as you would like, as long as you dont move forward. better use a baseball mitt, or else its nearly impossible to win.

Just based on the dynamics of it, I would play anybody in the world for any amount of money in a match where I use my tennis racquet and they have to catch and throw the ball in a best of 3 match. I would think the thrower would have pretty much 0% chance to beat me.
