Default Re: Official August thread: General Discussion, Goals, Winrates, etc

I am going to try to play a lot in august because when I get to school in september poker will be pretty far down on my list of priorities.

More and more this month I have been saying to myself "I'd rather read this book than play poker", I really don't have that much of an interest in playing much. I don't urgently need to earn money, the difference it would make would being able to splurge on more fancy crap and stuff like that, but with the $$ I have saved I'll still be able to do most of the same stuff without playing poker.

Given that I could play 20k or so hands and net around 5k in profit, it would seem like a stupidly easy decision for a college age kid to go out and cash that in, but I don't really feel that way like I used to. I feel like I just have a lot more worthwhile stuff to do. It isn't just a matter of putting school ahead of poker, that is a no brainer, but pushing poker out of the frame completely is a lot more than that. I probably will play very little in fall semester, then come back with a vengeance to have a 10k month in early 2007.

How do you balance sports, poker, and school, especially at a relatively tough school like williams? I am going to be a freshman in september and play a sport, one less demanding than football but theres still 2-3 hours of practice 5 days a week + a good amount of weekend travel. The only way I can see this playing out for me is "a lot less poker".

-Finally buy pokertracker, and begin to find out my stats, winrates, etc.
-Stop playing nittishly overrolled and move up to 2/4, maybe even 3/6 by the end of the month
-Start posting on 2p2 more actively (like at least 75-100 posts this month of replies to hands or troublesome hands of my own)
-Regain the motivation to play the occasional donkament again, pwn them, or at least make a $5k + score

Actually my main goal is to mentally handle losing buyins. I had a hard time sleeping after dropping 2 buyins over 2 hours tonight. That one hand I posted gave me nightmares.

Possibly I am playing too high and I have never been able to beat that feeling. I shouldn't be feeling that way I assume. After all I have around $7300 in my bankroll and I am playing $1/2 NL and have been steadily winning so I don't think I should be making the move down to .50/1 after losing 2 buyins.

FG - Similar thing happened to me the other day. I was beating one level for a good ammount over 10k hands, but not as good as I though I 'should' beat it. But I was playing short-rolled. Then I lost a couple buy-ins to what I believe was bad play, and it upset me. The next day I moved down.

I'm now playing a level I don't like playing... actually, that's wrong. I don't like the idea that I'm an X player when I feel I should be an X+n player. But, truth be told, I'm much happpier where I'm at now even though it's tiny stakes. It's fun to destroy your opponents. And when you have the luxury of being the best player at your table and a plentiful bankroll behind you, it's really easy to learn from your mistakes. So now even though I'm playing for tiny stakes, I'm learning & getting better while rebuilding my roll. What could be better?
