[ QUOTE ]
Vito loaned that guy 20k and was willing to give 200k to tony that he was sitting on. Why the hell did he have to do construction work in the new hampshire town? [/ QUOTE ] He must have had money stashed away that he couldnt get at because he had to leave so quickly. Also the construction in the town was his shot at trying a straight up life for abit. They had to show him failing to justify him coming back to New Jersey. |

[ QUOTE ]
will something come of this? [/ QUOTE ] Ummm..no. First off you misquoted Phil - it's brother-in-law, not brother. This correction should help you better understand that Phil was distancing himself from Vito while still being sensitive to the grieving widow (this is the same reason he had the television turned off during the bodybuilding competition). There is no intention to set up Phil as a closeted homosexual. I think you have completely misinterpreted his actions. There is no doubt that Phil was repulsed by Vito's lifestyle. |

There is no intention to set up Phil as a closeted homosexual. I think you have completely misinterpreted his actions. There is no doubt that Phil was repulsed by Vito's lifestyle. [/ QUOTE ] Obv Phil was repulsed, he is a Roman Catholic mob guy, I understand this. And I take umbrage that you think I've "completely misinterpreted" his actions. I'm not interpreting his actions, I'm interpreting how the show frames him in the episode. My reasoning: He hates gays, feels disgraced because there is a gay in his extended (blood-related) family, and therefore wants him killed, easily recognizeable, standard Mob culture stuff. BUT... There was no need to have him emerge from the closet when they beat Vito in the hotel room. The other two guys were already visible in the room, and Vito wouldn't have been able to seem him in the dark anyway. So... this means that the show was either using him "coming out of the closet" as humorous irony, or adding another pscyhological character twist into their storylines (which they obv. like to do), I was just wondering if anyone else though this as well. In this case, Phil hates gays, and himself as well, and wants to kill Vito in order to show everyone else that homosexuality won't be tolerated, as it is in his mind. (obviously there are other factors involved here, but not for this argument.) |

I believe it was humorous irony. Nothing else.

My lord... some of you people really suck at watching TV. "OMG Phil came out of the closet LITERALLY!!11 He must be a GAY!"
I'd put my whole roll on a 10:1 bet that Phil will never be a gay character. |

This thread started hurting my head about 10 posts in.
That having been said: It will be a sad day when there are no more Sopranos episodes to watch. A(n) historically good show, whatever its occasional stumbles. |
