American athletes always seem to raise their standards in big competitions, so I wouldn't rule them out. That said, they are still huge underdogs.

No. especially to the last point, that's so far off it's absurd. the US is developing some good talent however "best young talent in the world" is just flat out wrong. i think we'll be in the same place in 2010, i team with potential to break out of our group but not get too far after that. still, i'll be rooting for the US all the way til they're eliminated [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Someone like Freddy Adu (not a huge soccer fan so don't flame me if he is all hype) turning into the "Jordan" of soccer in terms of skill and marketability would do more for soccer in America than winning the WC. He doesn't need to be the best in the world, just clearly become the best in this country.

just got to this thread, but pointing out their group is silly, or maybe you are just forgetting how good of football that romania and colombia played back in 94(or have only started to trully follow football in the past few years). Not to mention that switzerland was(and still is) a solid footballing nation while the US was still a minnow at that time. So, yes, the US getting to the second round for the first time in modern history in their third WC in post WWII football was big
