The problem with some of the responses being slightly too famous is nothing compared to people just posting the names of John Candy movies.

River Phoenix is well-known if you were a young person in the 80's. Anyone over 25 should know his story and some of his movies. and with Joaquin's success, I'm sure even more know.

Someone I think fits better is Justin Pierce. I think he could have been a talented comedic and dramatic actor.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who has actually nailed "kinda famous" in this thread. Everyone else mentioned that I'm a fan of I considered too famous to post (even Hicks, HST, Hedberg, etc.)

Damn. I was fairly certain Johnny Thunders wasn't a name on the end of everyone's tongue when you say "influential guitarists" (except for me, of course) so I thought I aced the 'kinda famous' bit. Makes me sad I didn't. I do give you mad props for Peter Tomarkinshercocktoasten, because I still don't know who he is.

Bah, yeah, that's a good one. I think I remember he died in his mid 40s in New Orleans? Basically after being a junkie the last twenty-odd years of his life.

Peter Tomarken was the host of Press Your Luck. He was an influential part of my childhood.

Note from the OP

What I meant by kinda famous was someone not known by almost everyone.... Sid Vicious would be an example, I guarauntee niether of my parents would know who he is, country music fans mostly wont know who he is.... Zevon is also a good answer, because he died just a few years back, but most HS kids have know idea who he is... and the ones who do probably would say " that guy who sings the werewolf song" The lead singer of Sublime is famous in OOT, but in actuality, 98 percent of the public would not know his name, and 75 percent couldnt name one song by Sublime.

Dont get caught up in the definition of "kinda famous"... like I said before, just don't start naming icons. I actually learned of a few new dead talents so far that I had never hearf of, I'd like to learn of a few more.

Still surprised noone has brought up Randy Rhodes, Sid V, Lisa Left Eye, Lenny Bruce, Freddie Mercury, and Brian Piccolo. (these would all be good examples of "kinda famous")
