Wyborowa, Polish, not even expensive. Don't bother with the "reserve" or whatever up-marketed one they have, just the regular Wyborowa. Tastes like vanilla, almost. (and no sweeteners or flavorings--that's not what I mean.) it's probably my absolute favorite (not Absolut...), and I've tried lots. I won't go on and on reviewing various ones, but I will agree with Ketel One as a fine rec, and say that I too often have Skyy and like it well enough to drink on the rocks. (Did you know that a prolific inventor developed it to avoid hang-overs??)

Here from a random review is the exact impression I had when I tried it the first time at random years ago: "Has a sweet, creamy and velvety texture."

hmm, for some reason it's off Bevmo now. Last place I got it was Coit Liquors in San Fran north beach.

This thread is too long so I did not read but I am a fan of STOLI. I also think absolute Level is a very good top shelf vodka. what kind of drink is he this guy drinking because depending on what if anything is being mixed with the alcohol will tell you what level vodka you should get.

Stoli and Skyy are probably the two worst i have ever had.

[/ QUOTE ]

you need to drink some worse vodka!

[/ QUOTE ]

ive only drank Ketel One, Grey Goose, Absolut, Finlandia (very good try it if you have the chance), Belvedere, Chopin, and Smirnoff

out of all those Stoli and Skyy have been the worst by far.

How old are you? Did you go to college?

Mr. Boston and Purple Powerade were consumed in mass quantities my sophomore year.

20, U of I ending my sophomore year soon.

[/ QUOTE ]

How is this possible?

[/ QUOTE ]

U of I kids are apparently rich. I rarely saw anything as nice as the stuff he mentioned in college and I went to a big school (UCLA).

[/ QUOTE ]

I go to freakin harvard and the only vodka 'nicer' than absolut I've had was grey goose, and I bought it myself (and was far from impressed, this thread makes me happy that higher end vodkas get much better than gg)

I don't understand how you go to a state school and have never had generic vodka

try cossack. it comes in a plastic bottle and costs 7 dollars a handle. not sure you can get it anywhere other than massachusetts/rhode island though.

edit: google search indicates there are several different vodkas made in various places that are called Cossack, including one that has won some awards. I'm talking about the one made in Somerville (Slummerville), MA.

I haven't read all the replies, but at its pricepoint Fris is the best IMO, measurably better than many vodkas priced higher (Stoli, Grey Goose, etc). Among the vodkas in the tier just below "premium", I really like Ketel One. It is an extremely smooth vodka. It is the Fris of the higher price range-right there with Chopin, Rain, etc in terms of taste, but without the sticker shock.

I go with Fris as my everyday vodka (for mixing and the like), Ketel One as my straight vodka, and the higher-priced ones when I'm trying to impress or just to indulge myself.

Wyborowa is really good. My polish roommate from college introduced it to me.

Thanks to those who recommended Svedka as it was on sale for $18 for a 1.75L. It was very smooth without an aftertaste. It made a super vodka martini.

This is correct imo. If you're going to drink vodka straight Ketel One is your best choice.
