well, it was his throwing day anyways, so torre gave the bullpen a rest and used pettitte it is standard for pitchers to throw, typically, on their 2nd day of rest [/ QUOTE ] Right, however its not standard for them to do this in a game. Personally it makes sense, your SP are your best pitchers, so why not do this? Which begs the question, why dosn't everyone do it? |

It was an interesting move by Torre, to say the least. |

(granted - that's the playoffs and an entirely different situation, haha) |

chien ming wang did this last year once or twice as well.
i don't know the rules with regard to assignments and callups, but the yankees should definitely get another arm out there in the bullpen somehow. can they send igawa to the minors and call him up 3 days later for his start? somehow i doubt this is allowed. also thayer you know colter bean's PECOTA gives him a 5 ERA, right? i don't see who's worse than that in our bullpen right now. |

On April 20th there are 145 more games and 6 more months of baseball to play. It just smacks of desperation. I'm no Torre lover, but I'm not a Torre basher either. That said, I might give another manager the benefit of the doubt and might view it as an unconventional yet progressive move. However, with all that is said about Torre's horrendous handling of pitchers and his bullpen -- most of that coming from Yankee fans -- I just can't give him the same benefit here. |

We got a bad team this year. The biggest problem is that no starting pitcher goes deep in a game, and every bullpen pitcher is inconsistent. Maybe Pettitte and Wang will give them 8 solid on a consistent basis. Maybe. Mussina is not the pitcher he was, nor is Rivera. Clemens is a question mark and so is Hughes. Meanwhile, we're 21-27. If Jeter or Posada doesn't get a big hit, nobody does.
I've seen no evidence that this team can compete with the better teams in the league. And no reason to expect that they will. Sure, maybe Abreu and Damon and Giambi will start to hit, but Jeter and Posada will cool off, and A-Rod already has. They're not 21-27 by virtue of bad luck or by accident. |
