Technically, I think the call against Crable was correct. I REALLY don't like it, but it's in the book. USC guy should have been called for it as well.
I listened to a couple of guys on the radio here in Columbus who were talking about the Crable hit and they were saying that they think the rule needs to be altered or scrapped altogether. I agree. I can't recall their exact reasoning, but it made sense to me at the time. Whether Crable made helmet-to-helmet contact on that play or not, Smith was going to get hit and hit hard. It seems to me that the rule really does nothing to protect anybody in that particular situation. |

[ QUOTE ]
You could make a distinction that Smith didn't have the ball and Cowan did, but that's dumb when you realize you can hit a guy just after he releases, and I'm not sure why you can hit him but not in the same way as if he had the ball. I mean, if the point is that you get close and can't stop or whatever, it's retarded to have a different standard. [/ QUOTE ] I really thought from the replays (and the announcers talking seemingly nonstop about how they heard helmets hitting) that it was the two USC guys who hit helmets there. The angle 5 seconds into this YouTube video of the hit seems to show pretty clearly that they were leading with their forearms. Later in the video you can see the USC players butting heads right before the hit. |

Yeah, I thought that too at the time, but they never slowed it down enough. Looks right. I'm all for no flag there. It's one thing if you do it gratuitously, such a receiver is in mid-air over the middle and you're teeing up from a distance, but if you're pursuing a guy with the ball, whatever. It's not easy to control, and if he doesn't want to get hit, he is perfectly well able to slide or not to run in the first place. Asking a receiver just not to go over the middle is a bit much.

[ QUOTE ]
that is absolutely obvious. but the slick campaigning by the coaches and players has bothered me. i heard some interviews in which tressel says you should have to win your conference first in order to play for the nat. championship. i think it would be much more classy for him to restraint from such comments during sensitive times, ala lloyd carr. anyways, i still wish for osu to lose a close ugly game. [/ QUOTE ] Quit your whining. You are embarassing yourself. No one on the Ohio State team or staff was "campaigning" to avoid a rematch. When asked, they state what every player, current and former, Michigan and Ohio State, would say. Neither team wanted a rematch before The Game, and now the winners don't want one after. Get over it. Your team lost. Again. Get used to it. Yes, you got screwed by the BCS. You are not the first or the last. Enjoy the Rose Bowl. |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm not talking about spearing or intentional helmet to helmet contact. The rulebook is somewhat vague but it mentions intent. Somehow over time helmet-to-helmet penalties have gone from being a judgment call to being automatic regardless of intent or the severity of the contact. Maybe my interpretation of the rule is incorrect, but it looks to me like it's been taken too far. *edit* FWIW, I have no problem with the Crable call. That's how they're calling helmet-to-helmet these days and they are pretty consistent about it. I would just like to see the rule changed or interpreted correctly. |
