Are we including famous to children also? Because the only names in this thread my 5-year old would recognize is Santa. (She knows the name Bush, but I doubt she'd recognize him.)

Jesus barely ekes out the win over george bush, but he has it easily over george w. bush. But if you switch it to Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazareth, dubya gets the win. Too lazy to check a lot of them, but Santa > Jesus > Bill Gates > Michael Jordan > Bill Clinton > Tiger Woods > Muhammad Ali > Michael Schumacher > David Beckham > Yao Ming Obviously this site doesn't give a perfectly fair means of comparison, but the results are interesting nonetheless. |

Nelson Mandella? lol. Maybe for South Africans. But I bet 90% of my friends (I'm 20 years old) wouldnt know who Nelson Mandella is or what he did. I cant imagine Mandella being a big deal in China or India either.
I'm pretty sure Michael Jordan atleast WAS the most famous person in the world from 95-2000, but may have been surpassed by someone thats currently in the spotlight. |

[/ QUOTE ] That site has Bush a couple orders of magnitude over the Pope, but I'm pretty sure more people worldwide would recognize the Pope than Bush (especially if he wears his hat). (I'm guessing that religion is more important to most non American Catholics than the foregin policies of the US). |

Many Americans seem to not realize that US sports are not that well known outside the US.
For sports its probably Jordan>beckham>Woods Jordan (everybody knows him but in europe more because of fame than actually seeing him play) Beckham (only bc US and Asia know him too, he is not the most famous in europe) Tiger Woods, golf just is not that big outside the US compared other sports imo. |

I think we need to define famous better. If you define fame as "number of people who recognize the name", the answer is could be someone like Elvis or Michael Jackson or Michael Jordan or some other international cultural icon. It could also be Bush, but I'm not sure of the relative recognition. If you define fame in terms of how many people follow that person close enough to know things about them, then the answer is clearly George W. Bush. He is a huge topic of discussion almost anywhere in the world, and probably has nearly as high of name recognition as anyone else, period.
As for sports, I wouldn't be surprised if Beckham was on par with Jordan globally. Both are almost certainly miles ahead of Tiger Woods or even Shumacher. |

some old people in foreign countries will not know of sports stars like jordan, so any sports player is out. almost every adult in the world will have heard of bush and osama. when you start counting children more will know of bush than osama, so bush wins.
