If the tournament staff is going to take a tip out in advance for the staff and dealers I don't think the player should be under any obligation to tip more.

I would tip something of course, because it's just too much money and just to be nice, but in theory he already tipped a huge sum of money just by winning the prize.

Honestly I think that every tournament should just take the tip out in advance. It's really absurd to take the tip out of the prize pool and then get upset because someone doesn't extra tip. The WSOP directors obviously decided what they thought was a fair tip before the event.

In the Mans defense, He is Australian. In Australia you are not allowed nor do you 'tip'. Staff are paid by their employer, not by players.

Default ROFLMFAO

I was "sent" to this thread because "my advice was needed." Already I'm chuckling under my breath.

Now, I have read exactly two posts, and I see one that says he tipped $100, and another that says he tipped $150,000.

Michael, I tend to think you probably know better than I do on this matter, because I have absolutely no clue whatsoever as to what the actual tip was, since I pay little attention to what the pros, or those who enter large money televised tournaments, do at these events. I barely even watch it on TV.

However, my "expoit" opinion is this:

If he tipped $100, he's a schmuck. Kick him repeatedly and very squarely in the nuts.

If he tipped $150,000 then I have no problem with it, he's a nice guy.

Note that as the game stakes / payouts for tournaments goes up, my "percentages" discussed in the FAQ on B&M, and other threads on tipping in both ring games and tournaments, breaks down (my comments generally apply more to low limit games, which is what I deal and more often than not play in).

$150,000 is a fine tip in this case (lol, assuming that is what the tip actually was, since I have no clue ).

Thanks ChristinaB for "recommending" me for this discussion!

Culturally, we don't tip in general. Although we tend to tip these days at resteraunts or in a taxi, but only when we think we had good service. If they allready took money out for a tip from the prizepool, I agree 100% that $100 was generous.

As an aside, in Australian casino's like the Crown, they make you pay for your booze =( They even hit you up $2 for a coffee.

Default Re: fyi: Raymer tipped $50,000 on his win.

Raymer has already proven himself to be a classy guy in the past, why would we be surprised if he left a particularly generous tip after winning a large sum of money?

Don't they take 3 percent from the prize pool? That means he's already tipped far more than is necessary.

*DING*

Anything Hachem gave would have been on top of what he was already required to tip. Giving a person a hard time just because he didn't tip a higher amount over what he was already required to tip is silly. If the dealers want bigger individual tips, they should discuss the policy with the people in charge.

In Australia people get paid to do their jobs they dont rely on sucking up to rich people to make a living. We dont give tips.

He probably has better people to waste the money on like family and friends not a bunch of dealers.

The only chump here is you for being such an ignorant moron.

Fair enough, but don't expect a whole lot of people to believe you when your only evidence is an uncorroborated talk with three Binion's dealers and your response to what seemed to me to be pretty obvious questions is "believe what you want".

from "Positively Fifth Street", p. 323:

"I decide to tip $7,500, plus another $300 for John Gerhart [the dealer who dealt the satellite where he won his seat]. Altogether this comes to 3.3 percent of my profit...And now Tom [Elias] is thanking me so profusely I'm afraid I overdid it." (emphasis mine)

So McManus gives a 3.3% tip to the entire staff and $300 to a single dealer? Based on your standards I guess he's a chump too, right?

[/ QUOTE ]

From what I recall (I read the book a month or so ago), McManus describes the payout procedure as one with lots of implied suggestions to tip. IMHO, he implies the entire process as heavy with non-verbal tipping pressure.

[/ QUOTE ]

As I went through this thread, I recalled this as well. While $$$ is taken out of the money pool for staff, appearantly there is a tradition that the big winners give additional tips from there winnings. McManus did it, and we know Raymer did it ... that was money over and above what Binions/Harrahs took out and distributed.

Assuming that there is some type of tradition about the big winners tipping, I'll bet that once the new champ finds this out, he will do the right thing.

Default why are winners expected to tip at all ?

EVERY player in the main event has already contributed $200 to the floor and dealers, a total of over $1 million, so why is the winner supposed to tip some ridiculous amount ?

Why doesn't anyone ask why ANYTHING is taken out of the prize pool when ESPN is already paying Harrah's money for the broadcast rights. Harrah's cleans up, ESPN gets one of it's highest rated shows of any kind, but the participants are still providing not only the prize pool but also the dealers' wages.

I don't see Tiger Woods and Ernie Els putting up the money they are playing for and then tipping all the officials and groundskeepers after they win.
