Preflop is fine - you're hoping to help knock shortie out when it looks like bigstack may be willing to check it down. The worst outcome is that shortie beats both of you, otherwise we're ITM.

It really isn't good for you if shortie wins this hand though - and your pair of 6s might not beat him even if bigstack folds, which he probably won't. You want bigstack to be in to knock out shortie if you can't, and/or to pay you off at the river if you hit the straight/2 pair/trips.

It's fine to protect a strong hand with a push in this sort of situation - but you need to be very sure that you can beat shortie with what you're already holding.

I don't think this is totally dumb at all - just a bit overanxious on the flop - which is understandable.
