[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] The only thing that should be banned are miltary type weapons...assualt rifles, automatic weapons etc. [/ QUOTE ] Automatic weapons are not banned, but no weapons made after (I think) 1986 are legal. No one without special permits can own one and haven't been able to since Prohibition. I don't know what you define as an assault rifle. Hopefully it's a little more substantive than Congress's attempt to define it... [/ QUOTE ] yeah in general I don't believe in the public being allowed to own and carry M-16s/AK47s/etc [/ QUOTE ] Practically, these things (the full auto versions) aren't allowed. How many crimes do you hear that are committed with automatic weapons (assuming you live in the US)? You can own semi-automatic versions, but then there's not much distinguishing an AR-15 from a semi-auto hunting rifle. |

This is why "assault rifles" is a horrible term. Some people mean machine guns, while some people mean scary guns. I never know what someone means when they say assault rifle, while I know exactly what they mean when they say automatic or semi-automatic rifles. Also, if you see some of the pictures of the VT shooting, the SWAT appear to be using automatic weapons. |

If the figure is 1 or higher, its obviously been a positive move. [/ QUOTE ] This is the stupidest thing I've heard in my life. You can justify ANY draconian measure with this kind of logic. Hey, let's ban sex outside of licensed fertility clinics -- no more AIDS! If it saves just one life, it will all be worth it! |

[/ QUOTE ] No one has suggested that that would be a good thing. And even if the students could carry concealed, they couldn't carry it somewhere that alcohol was served. And if you look at the crime rate for those who carry concealed, you'll notice that the crime rate for them is much, much lower than the average. |

I never know what someone means when they say assault rifle, while I know exactly what they mean when they say automatic or semi-automatic rifles. [/ QUOTE ] Your post highlights a very interesting point, the term 'assault' rifle is clearly a propagandized name. It's akin to the name 'extra violent' rifle or some such name. Rifles are not assaultive, people are. That name is an anti gun rights propaganda name used to put fear in peoples hearts, it is an emotional scare tactic. |
