Default Hello! jbixit! I agree with MRB---

If U play live,U might want to view Caro's video "tells" and start reading "The Psychology of Poker" by Dr. Schoonmaker.

7CS4AP is the nuts. West's book stinks. If you've studied poker some, you don't need a so-called beginners book, which is good because they all stink. The stud section in Super/System is excellent. The stud/8 section in SS2 is very good. Landon has never read Ray Zee's book.

Mason reviews books by other publishers all the time, and they are actively discussed in the Books forum. You're free to make or solicit comments about any poker books. If you're hawking your own poker book, there are restrictions, however.

I have seen frequent criticism of West's book on this forum. Can you be specific about why it's a book to avoid?

Also - not to be a cheerleader for 2+2 or anything - but Fundamentals of Poker by Malmuth/Loomis is an excellent beginners book. There is sound, basic, fundamental strategy covered in there - and is helping me keep afloat at penny limits while I dig into the more advanced books (actually - I'm doing a bit better than keeping afloat - it doesn't take much to beat those limits).

I'm a fan of your avatar, by the way. I was a band kid right through college (percussion) - although I did start my musical career in 5th grade in the lower brass - trombone, and did even experiment with sousaphone for a month or 2.

Here is a thread where I went off on the West book. I think there's an older thread where I went into more depth, but this should give you an idea.

Black Flag uses some sousaphone, right? I think the last time I played one was 1988. They hurt my back.

Andy and I disagree on West. While there are some bad examples and weak tight or limited thinking in the book (and by the way there's bad stuff in 7csfap, as well), overall it provides an excellent framework for a player new to stud. What makes it better than other beginner books (from Kammen's awful one to Adams decent effort) is that it introduces hand-reading, implied odds and other advanced concepts in a simple way. So while it's not perfect, I still think West is the best starting point for stud.

Thanks for all your input!

Well, I am not new to poker. Have been playing for a couple of years, but mostly holdem and some little omaha and 5-draw. I wasnt really looking for a beginners book so I belive i will settle for the once i already have: SS1, SS2 and from there if i find it worth the effort continue with stud for advanced players.

Thank you!

Thanks for the link.....a helpful link, in general.

I'm sure Black Flag were huge sousaphone fans....such a shame their all-sousaphone record was never released.

If you're referring to the prose, I agree. If you're referring to the content, I'm anxious to know which parts you don't like.

Here's how it went for me:

I played so-so at .25/50 till I read Roy West's book. The simple and easily understood strategies took me successfully to $1/$2. I read the book several times. If you are playing at these stakes or lower, I highly recommend this book as your first reading. You should probably also start reading Theory of Poker.

Following advice on this forum, I read 7cs4ap and TOP and these books really taught me more than West's book - way, way more. I knew I had reached a new plateau in my poker knowledge and ability. I then went on a burn which was in good part due to my pedantic use of this poker knowledge and ability.

7cs4ap could be titled "How to win at high ante stud vs advanced players". And that's why it's so good. But I have found that taking its teachings to low or mid level tables is rather tricky.

Yeah, I'd also like some detail on the 7cs4ap critique.

cheers,
