the metro north ticket vending machines give change in sacagaweas. (i have no idea how to spell her name) I rarely pay in cash for my train tickets, but when i do I hate the dollar coins. they are cumbersome and heavy in my pocket if I get more than two or three.

Why do they keep making them quarter size? Make them bigger, make them an octagon, punch a hole in the middle, whatever... just make it so I don't think it's a quarter everytime.

The BART machines give change in quarters. You think getting 5 dollar coins is annoying? Wait until you get 20 quarters. Also, dollar coins are easier to use in vending machines thn dollar bills. You don't like your dollar coins? Just use them the next time you need a Metro North ticket.

incidentally, in the UK £5 notes are getting harder to get -I have my money on the mint issuing a £5 coin sometime before 2010 and people being *forced* to use them since £5 notes are more scarce...

I just saw this topic for the first time. Personally I don't think that I would use dollar coins purely because I lose coins too easy and it is easy to carry paper in my wallet.

from a Euro Smeggery POV I hate the fact all US bills are the same size. Scaled sizing from small denomination -> large denomination is goot.

Thing is, the reason people lose coins or don't treat them as real money is because people are used to coins being basically worthless. I give change to my 5 year old all the time, because I don't care about 5, 10, or even 25 cents. So it's just a psychological thing. Once you get used to handling coins that actually have some worth, you'll take care of it better.
