"Aren't hyenas some of the fiercest hunters?"

Hyenas are pack hunters and scavengers. They are built for stamina and litterally run their prey till they collapse. Their packs have been known to drive lions away from their kill (though not at a frequent rate)- this is partially due to their numbers, as they usually outnumber a lion's pride 30-10 or so. They are also built with very strong shoulders and necks to tear apart carcesses- i don't think thta their physiology would match them pu well one on one with any of the ocmpetitiors here.

Not having the Hippo beating the Tiger 90/10 shows how many of you live in a shoebox.

[ QUOTE ]
From "Animal Faceoff":

African Elephant vs Brown Bear:

A 14,000 pound elephant vs. an 1,100 pound bear? Our experts and analysis say the elephant would win at least nine out of ten times. Why the caveat? Because anything can happen in the wild at any given moment, they say, and it is impossible to say for certain what would happen in a given bout.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'll believe it when I see it. Grizzly's are natural born carnivors. They are built perfectly to hunt other animals and kill them. Elephants are herbavors. They wouldn't know what to do against the grizzly. Size isn't everything.

How many 5 year-old hyenas could an elephant take on?

I'll happily lay 9:1 to anyone taking the bear. Actually I'll even sweeten the deal and offer 10:1.

"The grizzly bear is a poor predator, taking down a caribou only when the opportunity arises. This, however, shifted his evolution in favour of the job in hand, namely as a digger of hard barren ground for roots, tubers and den building. The grizzly bear subsequently evolved enormous bone and muscle density; roughly ten times our own for a given size. They have developed into huge and enormously powerful animals."

The experts were divided over Lion v Rhino, but it looks like they were pretty unanimous over Elephant v Bear.

for one they only picked the lion 6-4, and i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that a lion would have a massive experience edge- and being specifically built to hunt- i could see how that might sway you and make it a decent match.
But a bear beating an elephant? hell no.
