[/ QUOTE ] From a pure long term view, I'm not sure the Bishop at g6. I would be afraid that at the right (or wrong) time f4 would be played and without a pawn at e6 to stop its advancement.. oh well.. it could look silly. Of course that's the abstract view, so I think Be4 is following the plan of why "this move" was played over Bc5. Of course Qc8 has some merit, however it does not support the d pawn.

Not necessarily. Look at his Queenside bishop. That's more of a threat. He could also bring it out, and not want to close its attack options.
Be4 is good, but it may weaken the future defense of the king and effectively put Black into a defensive game. Without being facetious, Nb4 looks rather lonely right now.

[/ QUOTE ] I'm not a fan of Nb4, but Be4 does not have to be played defensive. 10. Nd4 Be4 Now white has two main options 0-0, f3. White will not play Bxe4 its not even a real option right? After 10. Nd4 Be4 11. 0-0 Bc5 and we will transpose back to the "winner of the poll move?" 11. f3 Qb6 is an attempt at mixing things up and avoids your concern of being stuck in defense.

What's white's likely response to Qc8? Nc3?
10. ... Qc8 11. Nc3 Bc5 12. Be3 Doesn't seem that bad offhand, and 12. a3 Nc6 seems okay too. Does anyone else have thoughts on how Qc8 ends up?

Qc8 seems to clog up the c-file and it also leaves the already stressed epawn with one less defender. a3 and Nc3 for white if we play Qc8 would give white a pretty intense initiative and help him further his development with tempo.
With the line suggested also white will easily be able to Rc1 creating even more problems.
