My brother was playing a hand on Pokerstars when the following happened. Is it acceptable behaviour to ask an opponeent not to call? What can be done about it?

Bad form? Yes.
Cheating? Yes.

These two should be reported to Pokerstars immediately. Even though attempting to isolate against a short stack on the bubble with 99 means he's an idiot, the fact that he wanted to make sure his friend didn't play against him makes him a cheat.

Thanks for that, wanted to make sure before I emailed them. Not sure exactly what can be done about it now, but hopfully it will prevent it happening someone else in the future.

Agreed with QuickLearner, illegal as can be. PokerStars should be alerted.

Too late to help your brother but not too late to get them banned so they can't do it again.

Got an email back saying that the person in question may not have been aware of the rules and has been informed of them now. A further infringement might mean a chat revokation or disqualification. Etc.

Is that not a bit lenient? It was small stakes, but surely they should at least be banned from chat?

That's basically the same thing that would have happened in most casinos. There would be a warning before any penalty action, so it seems okay to me.

Cool, fair enough. Doubt we'll run into him again anyway, and it's the first time I'm seen anything like this and hopefully the last.

I agree whole-heartedly that its cheating and they should be kicked in the balls, but I think you want to see them again. Anybody stupid enough to cheat through the chat for all to see instead of say MSN or other IM client has to be functionally retarded.

I doubt these guys realized what they were doing was cheating. I can't count the times I've played live and had a guy say, "check it down?" or similar. In this case a warning is appropriate. If it happens again of course I'm sure that Stars will take sterner measures.
