the pro-splitters believe lots of people would love to discuss the subjects but won't do so in oot.

I haven't read this thread, but I don't know why this would be/is true.

Any possibility the A&E forum could be created on a trial basis? ...with the understanding A&E content could still be posted in OOT during this trial period?

I don't know. I don't really have strong feelings either way on this issue. I was just trying to find a compromise.

Not a bad idea, and in related news it turns out that people who want an A&E forum also pronounce "OOT" as in rhymes with "boot". Lame. Might as well let them go.

I see Mat already addressed this in this thread.

Never mind.

Throughout this thread, people keep trying to bring out the old strawman of "if we split off A&E, then why not split off 100 other subforums? Wouldn't that suck?" This argument is horribly lame. If splitting off specifically A&E is good, we should do it. The idea that we shouldn't do it because it will lead to splitting off more things later is really weak.

I like the idea for the same reasons that others do, mostly that OOT is so high-traffic that good threads can get buried quickly.

I vote for splitting. OOT is just too big and it's sad how the A&E stuff gets burried.

I think OOT is the perfect place for stuff like
-how many 5 year olds
-color of a tennis ball
-this girl just stepped on my toe, does that mean she likes me?

OOT should truly be Other Other Topics, not Movies, Music, and Other Other Topics.

Also, stop calling it "splitting." The proper term should be "creating." We should create a new forum for A&E, because it's not about pulling anything much away from OOT to do so, we'd be adding more...

What about a rule about off-topic threads? Mods can ask the OP if they want to move the thread to the appropriate forum or if they want it to stay in OOT. Then it's the OP's choice. It shows a preference for keeping A&E topics in an A&E forum and Sports in Sports and so on and so forth, but it doesn't change OOT from being a place where anyone can post just about anything.
