Looks like another two years of hearing the English moan about foreign managers and players taking over the game.

btw I am happy with this. I didn't want Mclaren as he is totally unproven - I couldnt believe my ears and eyes when it seemed that he was going to get the job. Sure, it would be nice to have an English manager but Scolari is proven and has pwned Sven Goran Erikson twice, this England team is really exciting and I think we will do good things under Big phil.

While I think that McClaren wasn't the right guy to go after, I think that BIg Sam or Martin O'neill would've been the much stronger choices(though they obviously don't have the international pedigree that Big Phil has). Big Phil has also generally advocated a bit of a defensive style which doesn't play into england's strengths right now as a team

i think international play is real different as the teams are usually less balanced than clubs.
and scollari has a lot of experience in international competition although i don't know well mclaren neither o'neill but i think scolari was actually the best available for that task.
he has made a great work with the portugal team, who's had good young players for years but unable to work as a team, he has changed that by makin tough decisions and they've reach the finals of the euro playin offensive football
i think you have good reasons to be happy about that news, i sure would

Yeah, just ask Romario and Luis Figo.

Now onto the substance of the question, he's the best manager England could have got once Guus Hiddink pulled out of the running by taking the Russia job. He plays his way to make a team concentrate on its weaknesses rather than its strengths, that is, if he feels a team is weak in defense and strong in attack, he will have them play relatively defensive football to counteract their weakness in defense. Also, unlike Eriksson, he is not afraid to make a controversial decision (such as selecting Brazilian-born Deco for the Portugeuse national team, subbing Luis Figo in the Portugal/England game, not selecting the popular Joao Pinto for Portuguese duty and leaving Romario home in the 2002 WC) which I think England needs, as Eriksson will leave Beckham on, no matter how badly he is playing and has persisted with a Gerrard/Lampard central midfield, even though it is blindingly obvious they don't play very well together.

All in all, the FA made the right decision, though as an Australian I would have loved to see them go for Allardyce or McLaren (and as a Manchester City fan, I'm glad they kept their mitts off Psycho).

I got the impression a lot of Man City fans are wanting to see the back of Psycho, there have been a few ranting calls to football phone ins that I have heard.

I dont really know anything about Scolari but it would seem he has decent experince moreso than any of the Brits in the frame, I think Alladyce may well be the next one after him once he gets experience at a bigger club.
