i dont think youre taking into account the other things that are in the news right now. in my opinion, natalie holloway was a "fluff" news story that was filling the news void at the time. the huge immigration story is pushing the duke rape case to the background here. had the duke story broke during a slower newsweek, i have think it would be much much bigger. [/ QUOTE ] Not a valid excuse because as one MSNBC news guy said, "whenever we have a story about Nathalie our ratings go up." |

I think some news mag did a story on this awhile back and one of the news shows even admitted that they do what pulls the ratings and abductions/murders/etc of white victims pulled way better rating than those of minorities.

As a former Duke student, I'll definitely confirm the isolation from the community. Note that I'm not rich - middle class at best and I paid my way via scholarships and loans. But the way the financial aid system worked, if you had a car, a large percentage of the blue book value got deducted from your financial aid. This tended to keep a lot of students on campus.
That said, there are certainly a lot of rich, spoiled kids having out of control parties and it wouldn't surprise me if the lacrosse team belonged in that group. |

Any american teenage girl getting lost over there would be a big story. [/ QUOTE ] I seriously doubt it [ QUOTE ] News outletts main concern is ratings. If a story will get ratings, they report it. [/ QUOTE ] This is why I seriously doubt it. Everyone remember Terry Schiavo? Everyone remember Ms. Hudson? Thought not. |

This is because middle class+ white women are a big daytime TV demographic. Poor people work during the day, men don't care about Holloway type stories, etc.

Also most of the big time news shows are during primetime not daytime. Also couldnt find data about this, but I found an interesting story on it and an interesting website. 1 2 |

Just a reply in general...can we get a few more "allegedlys" thrown into posts here? A lot of talk as if it's 100% we know what happened.
Watched Scarborough Country tonight and it sounds like the DA is backpedalling big-time. But the circus is well underway. |

Hmmm. I'm concerned.
Reading some of the comments by the attorneys, some things have been said that make me worried that this will go unpunished. They've said things like "tests they said will prove no one on the team raped an exotic dancer" (from here: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2390981 ). There was another comment I read yesterday that now escapes me, but the way things are being phrased, I just gotta wonder....what if it was some friends of the team that raped her (maybe with teammates holding her down)? I mean, it sounds like only the team members are being tested, but surely others were at the party....weren't there? I guess I'm somewhat convinced that SOMETHING illegal happened. And, it seems like if the perpetrators were not Duke Lacrosse players, it will go (largely) unpunished. And that would be tragic. Josh |
