When I needed surgery in Canada, I went to emerg, got seen by a surgeon within 30min, and had surgery an hour later. I was treated great for the week in recovery and never had to pay a cent the whole time. Slightly higher income tax is worth it if you don't ever have to worry about being wiped out financially by a serious illness.
