What do you mean by "really early"? I was gonna try and hit the road around noon...is that too late to dodge the traffic?

What do you mean by "really early"? Like leave at noon or leave at 10 am?

Not really, that's how I do it, but I'm old and have no problem taking off that early, in fact that's how I prefer it. Makes for a quick, easy drive, gets me into Vegas mid morning.

But in general, I think it's one of those "the earlier the better" things. I haven't driven a Friday afternoon to Vegas in years because, well, it sucks!

There exists the minor issue of work that needs to be taken care of should I choose to head out that early. How bad is the drive from LA? Worse than from SD?

Definitely try to leave by noon. You'll hit traffic in the Inland Empire, but it won't be that bad. If you leave after 1 pm, the traffic in the IE will be horrendous - there will be jams at every merge (15/91, 15/10, etc.)
