i'm a bit surprised by the responses. i saw it last night and thought it was a bit meh.

i didn't think it was a bad movie. it wasn't my kind of movie though. my problem with the movie was this: while i was watching it, i was thinking to myself "this isn't real. this is obv just a movie. this stuff could never actually happen. people would never talk this way. etc." the dialogue was too dramatic. and the drama just stuck me as too pronouced.

i much prefer movies where i feel like i'm just watching a glimpse into a day/week/life of a ("real") person. some examples off the top of my head: sideways, once, two girls and a guy

(side note: russell crowe is always playing these uber-charismatic roles, and honestly he just strikes me as someone who wouldn't really be that charismatic if i met him on the street. i do agree though that christian bale is the real deal.)

Saw it and thought overall it was a bland tedious action flick that just happened to take place in the Wild West.

Both actors are decent and the supporting characters are solid but thought the story was dull, contrived, and predictable...Crowe's character was laughably lame at times. Some scenes made no sense to me, ending made me roll my eyes.

Didn't think much of the directing/cine...basically non stop tight shots.

Hopefully Assasination of Jesse James will be much better...at the very least the directing will be better.

Thumbs down but worth seeing.

The buzz is going two ways. People either hate it or love it.
I usually prefer that over everyone saying its pretty good.

I have friends who saw it that said it is a touch to long but awesome non the less. Course if you hate Terrance Malick type films you probably won't like it.

Scene where he goes off and kills Indians then doesn't either a run away or B kill the guys taking him to be hanged.

Ben Foster rides thru town screaming "this town is gonna burn" shoots a couple of dudes then rides off.

Scene where he gets all emotional at Christian Bales confession and decides ya I'll run with you to the train so you'll feel better and maybe your kid will think your a cool dad.

Basically the entire end of the movie is retarded.

All 5 guys are up in the hotel...the bad guys(who have said they're going to kill everyone in the hotel room) are in plain sight about 10-20 feet away just like standing around and no one thinks...[censored] we could probable each take one out per person if we just shoot them now.

The bad guys don't simply stand outside each of the exits for the hotel.

The bad guys chase Crowe and Bale and shoot like crazy despite the fact they'll probably kill their boss.

Christian Bale gets Crowe on the train then despite the bad guys closing in and his son being nearby...turns his back to them so he can have a heart to heart talk with Crowe before being shot in the back.

Crowe decides to kill his entire posse and then get on the train. Ya..i know they tried to establish that like he realizes he's got some good in him after all, or he should pay for his sins blah blah blah...gay.

Crowe basically is both the dumbest and most lovable/kind and caring highway roberyman/cold blooded killer to ever exist in the Wild West.

there were countless more examples but I forget them.
Also the directing and cine was totally lacking for any style what so ever. Deadwood was shot better than this movie.

this seems like a good review (i have yet to see) but before i take this seriously i have to ask if you are the guy who gave two thumbs up to running scared. i think you are, but i dont remember perfectly.

the more i think about this movie the more pissed i get. it seriously insults the viewer's intelligence with its nonsensical ending. what a letdown.

Ya...we had a whole back and forth over that, i was drunk for most of it.
I've seen it two more times and in reviewing the film a second time..i realized I just liked several sequences and two specific characters a lot, pedo scene etc(mainly in terms of how they were shot and set design) and overall as a whole the movie wasn't all that good but the camera work was interesting at times.
